I have been having an issue with this Wingmaster for a while where the carrier won't lift shells as high as the chamber, resulting in the shell hitting the bottom of the chamber and not feeding. This occurs whether I am "rough" with the gun or gentle. I know I am not short stroking the shotgun. I have other 870s that I have shot just the same with no issue. Googling the issue tells me I have a weak carrier spring. I imagine this is the original carrier spring from 1970, so there is a great possibility that it is worn out. The gun was HEAVILY used when I got it. It has been refinished and turned into a pure HD gun. I would prefer that it is 100% reliable, as it is supposed to be the HD shotgun for the household.

Here is a video showing the issue. I had fired about 75 rounds through it before making the video with about 15-25% of the shells having feeding issues. I shot both buckshot (that dark green Winchester "military" stuff) and the Federal birdshot you see in the video.

I am thinking I need a new carrier spring. Brownells has them, but I know enough folks that might have one lying around on a workbench.

That's probably not something someone's going to have laying around. Good luck and I hope this will fix your problem.

Brownell's has one, and it's cheap. Around here, though, you never know what folks might have. I'm not banking on anyone having one, though. Just gotta get around to ordering it from Brownell's.

At least I am pretty sure as to what the issue is.

Maybe something is making the spoon drag, a burr, slight bend hard crud deposit or something else. Just a thought. Just by looking at the video it looks like its coming to a hard stop and there is a snap when its pushed up. Just thinking out loud is all.

Springs wear out over time. They are cheap, and generally easy to replace. I was quite pleasantly surprised at the performance improvement I noted in three 20+ year old 22LR rifles when I replaced all the springs just because they were old. I went on to replace springs in everything that is 20 years old, including 2 Wingmasters, simply as a preventative maintenance precaution. Didn't note a change in the Wingmaster function with the new springs that I noticed.

The action on Rem 870 and 1100 shotguns is made of aluminum and will wear to the point where you can't rebuild it. A new trigger plate assy can be bought from GPC for around $80. I have overhauled a couple thousand of these over the years and, if the pin holes or spring plunger holes are wallowed out, you will waste money trying to replace individual parts.

Are you talking about the action or the internals? I never seen a 870 or 1100 with an aluminum body.

If you go over to shotgunworld.com and post in the Remington section, you'll get plenty of expert help. I think the part you're having trouble with is the shell lifter, not the carrier.

Yep. Lifter isn't popping all the way up, for whatever reason. Could be worn, could be bent.
Shotgun World is a pretty good forum for help. Also the best place for getting advise on keeping your shotshell reloaders working correctly.

Some times the shell carriers that bolt thru the receiver are too tight and bind things up.
