Great, now all of the news stations will be reporting on this for the next week. Remember when that idiot Kennedy crashed his plane off Nantucket with a couple of women on board, it was non-stop news coverage for a freaking week.

The one who was illegally transporting passengers with the wrong license and now another with a kid and no PFD?
The only thing that could possibly overshadow the tragedy is the criminal behavior with some of that bunch.

    A kid for goodness sakes.

With all the success and tragedies involved with that family I’d hazard a guess that Old Joe Kennedy made some sort of Faustian bargain 100 years ago.

Don't know the source but friends on a national boating site are indicating that the adult and child were recovered, deceased, late this afternoon. Sad, but pretty much expected with the wind and lack of other boaters on the bay.

That would explain an awful lot.....

McKean’s husband, David McKean, and her godfather Alan Fleischmann, both declined to comment Monday night when reached by phone. Townsend did not immediately respond to request for comment.

My utter contempt for Kathleen Kennedy-Townsend as a person aside, I am trying to understand the mindset or perhaps sense of entitlement that leads reporters to contact bereaving families - at the peak of their pain - for “comment.” Guess that explains my utter contempt for 90% of news “reporters” (cough).

Sorry for their loss. It is another tragedy for the family.

In conversation with my wife I called her actions stupid and got jumped on about it.
ANY body that goes on the water needs a PDF of one sort or another. EVERYBODY. So for this woman, not a kid, takes her son and gets in a canoe and goes after a ball. The wind that day had to be 15 knts. Let the ball go. The air temp in the 50's. Let the ball go. The water temp? In the 40's. Will disable you in a matter of minutes. The whole thing was easily preventable. Sad sad sad.
My wife says I don't have much compassion. She has been trying to instill more in me for 34yrs.
    Maybe I'll learn someday.

Its been interesting to watch the search effort. I'm frankly astounded that they've searched this long. Two guys that worked for me were lost just north of the bridge off sandy point about 7 years ago One was lost and not found, and I don't think they looked for them more than a day. He floated up about a month later.

I'm glad they found her and I hope they find the boy for the family's closure, but its obvious a whole different level of attention was paid to them.

FWIW - Charles County Search unit goes out for days pretty much anywhere in Maryland to assist in searching. Skeeter and his folks are very good at underwater searches and have been incredibly successful in pinpointing lost persons in some of the most challenging environments.

Let's see... as I understand things a mother and son ventured out in a small boat to retrieve a lost ball, rough conditions, not wearing life jackets, capsized and drowned. Several agencies spent four days, and (probably) hundreds of thousands of dollars, plus lots of manpower, to find them. I hope the family gets a bill for those services. It's one thing to have an accident when you do everything right, and another to prove that Darwin was right.

They didn't intend to go out in open water or rough conditions. From the articles I read they were playing kickball and the ball went just a few feet off the bank, into a small, sheltered cove in front of their property. They never planned to go out into the main part of the bay.... but the wind no doubt was too strong to overcome with one paddle (or possibly and adult and 8 yo paddling).

I agree it was unwise to go after the ball in a canoe, and stupid to go out without flotation devices. Hindsight is great, but frankly I've made similar risky judgements in my life, most people have, and luckily mine have never had the tragic consequences hers did.

Based on the articles I read, the house they were at is marked in the attached photo. You can see the area sheltered by the little protrusion of land... and at the base of that piece of land you can see two canoes pulled up on shore.
