I need a better pair of riding gloves for my bicycle. It is a hybrid type and I usually ride on anne arundel county roads. I would like a pair with good shock absorption qualities using gel instead of just foam.

    Thanks in advance.

Moto gloves may or may not be a good idea, they tend to be much thicker and heavier to offer protection at high speeds. I have used my Icon 29er moto gloves on my MTB to help with protection when riding my MTB in the woods, and they are comfortable, but hot, not moving fast enough for the cooling vents to do much. I've used MX or mechanix gloves and they are better, but lack the palm cushioning. Bought a pair of Fox Reflex MTB gloves for $20, they work by far the best, they are full fingered, but no bulky hot armor on the back, just free-flowing mesh, have extra gel pads on the palm, they are really comfortable. They make a few open and full fingered variants, can't really go wrong with anything Fox Racing.

I don't put 70 miles a week on my bike, I can tell you that!

I ride about 15 to 20 miles a week if my arthritis lets me (quite a few hills though).

The main reason I need good padded gloves is that the arthritis in my hands is getting worse. I don't want to change to another bike because 1) the hybrid 24 gear works on the hills of Davidsonville and 2) I'm too old and not interested in learning a new bike.

In my experience, gel doesn't help if you really ride a lot. It just moved the pressure around a bit. I ride about 7-8000 miles per year and go for as little padding as possible.

But...my handlebars are thick. They're sized well to my hands. You can find thinner or thicker grips for an MTB, or do multiple wraps of tape on a road bike.

If you're set on gel gloves, look into castelli or Louis garneau. Both great brands.

Or switch bars. Try to move some of the weight to your core. I realize you're (as am I) not a youngster so try to modify your bike. I modified my carbon road bike to use standard handlebars.

I don't have a specific brand recommendation but have found that padded fingerless gloves fit well inside a pair of armored mechanix gloves...so I double up. I get lots of palm and vibration protection, good grip dexterity(I still run SRAM gripshift) and impact protection during my inevitable spills.

I looked at changing the handle bar but, with the hills that I climb, I don't think that sitting up straight will work.
