I have the same set up 500 rifled barrel with scope mounted to the receiver. I have tried nearly every slug out there and could never get consistent accuracy out of it. I'm convinced it is because of the movement of the barrel. The only way to fix it is to permanently attach the barrel to the receiver, either pinned or soldered. By the way I solved my problem the same way you did.......I bought an H&R.
