At an $1100 price point, that's not a gun I'd see as a safe queen. I guess it depends on perspective, but as a musician, I'm whacking $1500 with of cymbals with a stick, and my main gigging trumpet is a $2400 horn, but that's nothing - my buddy is playing a $4200 horn and he doesn't even clean it regularly.
I'm also not that worried about finding a holster for the squared slide, although it does drastically cut down on choices.
I've looked at the Springfield TRP, and there's a lot to like there, but it's almost a grand more than the RO - just a touch out of my price range for now, but on your suggestion I'll give it another look.
Is the general consensus that Sig makes good 1911s?
Other 45s aren't off the table - I also have a USP 45 - I just want this next pistol to be a 1911. Then I'll start exploring other options, and the Sig p220 is on the list.Interesting that you have a 226 that you like and haven't considered a Sig P220. 45acp is my favorite caliber, and IMO the 220 is one of the best pistols on the planet. Of course a good 1911 is certainly nothing to sneeze at. Good luck.
For a bit more money, you might consider a Dan Wesson. For my first 1911 I stretched the budget a bit to a DW Pointman 45 and could not be happier.

As for grips/stocks, I'm not married to the ones that come on the STX - I like them, but a nice set of cocobolo grip would be something worth looking into.
Figured I'd post an update to this thread. I'm looking pretty hard at the TRP too - with a bit of discount from the SA military/LE program, the SA TRP is within striking distance...provided I'm still alive to enjoy it.Not exactly the same price point but if you can swing it the Springfield Armory TRP.
That is something I want to look into doing at some point, but yeah - from what I've seen, going down the road of building a quality 1911 from an 80 lower can be a costly venture in the long run. I may take you up on that one day after the craziness ends.I have 2 1911’s. One is a 1967 Camp Perry National Match. The other I built from an 80 percent. Both are great shooters. I know it’s a niche thing, but if you are a forum regular and are interested in building an 80% (oh, and feel safe spending several hours in my basement) you are welcome to use my Matrix Precision jigs. I have them all. Plus hammer/sear jig from Marvel. You can build a 1911 to rival any offering. You won’t save money, you’ll spend hours stoning, but you will have a great experience.

For this one though, this is what I'm looking at the hardest:
1.) Springfield TRP - likely the best bang for the buck
2.) Dan Wesson Valor - a super nice pistol and would be #1 but for the price (if I can get even close to the discount price of the TRP with the DW discount, it will be a strong contenter)
3.) Sig STX
If anyone has a suggestion that I'm missing now that my budget is bumped up a bit, let me know.
I'm not looking to make this purchase today, if that's what you mean, but if DW isn't open for business that means my inquiry regarding LEO/Mil pricing probably won't get answered any time soon.DW is closed right now so if that clears your bar you will be in for a wait. Springfield still rubs people raw for the chit they pulled in IL.
RUGER SR1911 they are awesome!I'm not looking to make this purchase today, if that's what you mean, but if DW isn't open for business that means my inquiry regarding LEO/Mil pricing probably won't get answered any time soon.
Does anyone even know what the percentage of discount is?
It's interesting - many firearms manufacturers offer discounts to first-responders and military, but it's like pulling teeth to find out specifics for some of them.
After sleeping on it, I'm thinking the TRP might be the one for me. It's a good bit more than where I initially came from - I was initially looking at the Springfield Range Officer - but I've always been the guy who tries to find the best deal out there in terms of quality and features for the money. That's why I held out for a Sig P226 Mk 25 when I picked up my first 9mm.
Is there anything else I should look at more closely that I haven't yet? Kimber? Colt?
