Interesting that you have a 226 that you like and haven't considered a Sig P220. 45acp is my favorite caliber, and IMO the 220 is one of the best pistols on the planet. Of course a good 1911 is certainly nothing to sneeze at. Good luck.

    Haha

At an $1100 price point, that's not a gun I'd see as a safe queen. I guess it depends on perspective, but as a musician, I'm whacking $1500 with of cymbals with a stick, and my main gigging trumpet is a $2400 horn, but that's nothing - my buddy is playing a $4200 horn and he doesn't even clean it regularly.

I'm also not that worried about finding a holster for the squared slide, although it does drastically cut down on choices.

I've looked at the Springfield TRP, and there's a lot to like there, but it's almost a grand more than the RO - just a touch out of my price range for now, but on your suggestion I'll give it another look.

Is the general consensus that Sig makes good 1911s?

About your buddy. Nice he went to SOTAI school of the american instrument. Cleans only when it needs it. My thoughts exactly unless needs to look clean on outside. Buddy had an effd up flugel horn that sounded awesome. Said it was like an old chevy 350. Do not clean else shit would start leaking and run terrible. Hahaha

I bought a Sig 1911 Target edition from Dan at Baltimore's Best Pawn about a year ago. It is a great gun but the recoil is perhaps a bit more than I would want to handle in an EDC situation. I'm not a big built guy so my Sig P226 and P229 work better for me. Just as an aside, Dan gave me a great price on the handgun. I'd definitely give him a call if I were looking to add to my collection.

When choosing the pistol (assuming you look at several) pay attention to the grain of the grip panels.

My right one had a bit of a void (very small) just below the top grip screw and it snapped in two when removed one day.

Easily repairable with some thin super glue - just something to be aware of... I replaced the OEM panels with some micarta ones. I know they won’t break

Other 45s aren't off the table - I also have a USP 45 - I just want this next pistol to be a 1911. Then I'll start exploring other options, and the Sig p220 is on the list. :)

As for grips/stocks, I'm not married to the ones that come on the STX - I like them, but a nice set of cocobolo grip would be something worth looking into.

For a bit more money, you might consider a Dan Wesson. For my first 1911 I stretched the budget a bit to a DW Pointman 45 and could not be happier.

I agree that DW's are worth stretching the budget. Fit and finish IMHO are noticeably better than Sig 1911's.

Not svelte, bulky but strong as blazes and accurate...Ruger P90. Had one, regret selling it.

Not exactly the same price point but if you can swing it the Springfield Armory TRP.
Figured I'd post an update to this thread. I'm looking pretty hard at the TRP too - with a bit of discount from the SA military/LE program, the SA TRP is within striking distance...provided I'm still alive to enjoy it.

I’ve had an itch for the full rail TRP, 5”. Handled one once..it left an impression. Not much more than the standard TRP.

Whatever direction you go, any TRP will be a good choice.

So as this stay-at-home rule continues, a couple of things have happened.

1.) I'm not spending as much money, so much more of my personal allowance is getting saved for this project (as of tomorrow I'll have over $1100 saved)
2.) I've had more time to go down the rabbit hole and read about 1911s, and which ones I might like to get into.

The Sig STX is still a contender, but at this point it's further down the list. Very soon, before this stay-at-home restriction lifts, I'll have the money for a Springfield TRP, especially at LEO/Mil discount prices.

    But....

I've also started looking at the Dan Wesson Valor, and apparently they have a really nice LEO/Military discount program - I don't know if it applies to me because I'm "only" National Guard rather than being active duty, and I know that some companies - Dillon Precision being one of them - don't offer the discount unless you are actively a first responder or active duty military.

There's one feature the Sig has that I think would be nice to have, and that's the adjustable tritium Novak style rear sight.

    3994849_04_sig_sauer_1911_stx_45acp_excel_640.jpg

With that in mind, now that my budget is already past the point where I could have bought the Sig for the non-discount purchase price, the Dan Wesson Valor would be a very nice pistol to have, even above the Springfield TRP, and I think both the Springfield and the DW would be on another level above the Sig.

I know they don't like people to publish their pricing, but if anyone has an idea just how much the Dan Wesson LEO/Mil discount is and would PM me, I'd really appreciate it.

Then I'd have to decide whether to get it in stainless or coated - I'm leaning toward stainless, mainly because I don't have a stainless pistol in my collection.

I have 2 1911’s. One is a 1967 Camp Perry National Match. The other I built from an 80 percent. Both are great shooters. I know it’s a niche thing, but if you are a forum regular and are interested in building an 80% (oh, and feel safe spending several hours in my basement) you are welcome to use my Matrix Precision jigs. I have them all. Plus hammer/sear jig from Marvel. You can build a 1911 to rival any offering. You won’t save money, you’ll spend hours stoning, but you will have a great experience.

That is something I want to look into doing at some point, but yeah - from what I've seen, going down the road of building a quality 1911 from an 80 lower can be a costly venture in the long run. I may take you up on that one day after the craziness ends.

For this one though, this is what I'm looking at the hardest:

1.) Springfield TRP - likely the best bang for the buck
2.) Dan Wesson Valor - a super nice pistol and would be #1 but for the price (if I can get even close to the discount price of the TRP with the DW discount, it will be a strong contenter)
    3.) Sig STX

If anyone has a suggestion that I'm missing now that my budget is bumped up a bit, let me know.

DW is closed right now so if that clears your bar you will be in for a wait. Springfield still rubs people raw for the chit they pulled in IL.

I'm not looking to make this purchase today, if that's what you mean, but if DW isn't open for business that means my inquiry regarding LEO/Mil pricing probably won't get answered any time soon.

Does anyone even know what the percentage of discount is?

It's interesting - many firearms manufacturers offer discounts to first-responders and military, but it's like pulling teeth to find out specifics for some of them.

After sleeping on it, I'm thinking the TRP might be the one for me. It's a good bit more than where I initially came from - I was initially looking at the Springfield Range Officer - but I've always been the guy who tries to find the best deal out there in terms of quality and features for the money. That's why I held out for a Sig P226 Mk 25 when I picked up my first 9mm.

Is there anything else I should look at more closely that I haven't yet? Kimber? Colt?

That is one of those cat's meow's. Nice.

trickg, something of note in making your decision is the difference in beavertail grip safety profiles of the Sigs vs. most others. This is a major feature for me..for you maybe not so much. The underside of the Sig grip safety has a contour along the lines of the GI A1 grip safety (or Colt Gov't or civilian models since 1925). In a word, it is more or less straight off the back of the pistol, parallel to the frame and slide rails. The DW's and most others the underside of the grip safety is upswept, some more so that others. Depending on how you grip the pistol it will make a difference in its shootability in your hands. Fitting an upswept safety on my Sig cut my groups on paper almost in half...and any other 1911 with an A1 grip safety as opposed to an upswept one.

    Just something of note.

Right now the two main contenders are still the Dan Wesson Valor (or maybe the Specialist, although I’m not a fan of a rail on a 1911) or the Springfield TRP. There’s enough money in my pistol fund for the TRP at military discount, but I’m holding out for the Dan Wesson, at least for now.

I did some brief looking at Kimber and Colt, but nothing I saw or read on those grabbed me the way the other two have.

On a side note, I’m really leaning toward stainless, but mainly because I don’t have a stainless gun. I’m open to the idea of SA Armory Kote, although getting the DW non-stainless bumps the price a couple hundred bucks.
