This question was started by a conversation with a gun counter salesman at one of the Academy Sports here in the Austin Texas area.

I buy a fair amount of .380 ammo to shoot through my two Rugged LCP's. I love the small size and ease of carry of them. I noticed that my local Academy was a bit short of .380 ammo and I asked why? The answer was, they sell so many of the Ruger LCP's, S&W .380 bodyguards, Keltec's Browning, and Glock 42's and the latest Sig, that the ammo ordering has not kept up. He went on to state that in the last year, the small .380's have been the most selling handgun flying out of the displays.

Now this is Texas, with long hot summers like the one we just had, with over 50 days of 100 degree or plus temps. Not much in the way of cover garments here. Maybe the rest of theo country not so much.

But when I was buying .38 special ammo before I got rid of my last .38 revolver, it was almost 20 dollar a box, with 9mm going for 15. Now the 9mm is 12 dollars with .380 going for 15, and .38 special at 20 dollars or more. The .380 stuff on the shelf from Remington, Agulla, Winchester, Sig, Browning, Federal, Magtec and others are all in the 15 dollar range with some steel case stuff going for 10 dollars.

The .380 seems to be gaining in popularity down here.

380 will never supplant the 9x19, at least not in present firearms formats. It has too much military demand and also because it is a very efficient cartridge. Many check boxes in the plus column for the 9x19. Many pistols originally designed for 380 have been upgraded and possibly replaced in manufacturer lineups by similar or slightly larger sized 9mm brethren. The Sig 365 is an excellent example.

The 380 is being kept alive because its lesser power and other parameters allow it to be chambered in small subcompact pocket pistols in blowback configuration. Not busting on the 380, just observing market offerings.

In case you haven't noticed, most if not all of the newer .380s, including the Kahr, Bodyguard, P3AT and LCP, are locked breach, not blowback. I have never felt under gunned with my Kahr .380 and Buffalo Bore ammo in the summer time. Carrying my M&P 40 in the winter is pretty easy. In the summer, not so much.

i think 380acp keeps getting better with new powders but so does 9mm luger. Until it passes the fbi balistic penetration test with hollow points, it'll always be ridiculed. Funny how way back in the 20s pocket pistols were all the rage and a ton of people carried 25acp.

Wifey tried my Glock 17 but was not happy. As such, I am looking at purchasing either a .32 or .380 semi auto to start off. The great guys at United Gun Shop took the time to show me some models. One was pretty much a newer release. Very light but good feel in the hand. It was a little while ago. Perhaps an S&W? Not a Ruger. Brother in Law in Pittsburgh carries a 32 for concealed.

Like my other post, BiL carries concealed .32 semi auto. I have shot it and for a small pistol, not bad at all.

    More women. :innocent0

My wife stopped at 380acp. She fired a 9mm once.

Yeppers. Was trying to get her to try a Keltec PMR30 I was playing around with and she did not like all the "flames" from the .22 magnum. hahaha

Back in early-mid 2000's one of the foremost forensic ballistic experts (believe his handle was docgrc or something along those lines) said hollow points are a no-no in 380's. The outerwear would impact the ballistic of the round, therefore he recommend FMJ. Of course technology has increased in the are of powders etc, would love to read his opinion of todays ammo.

9 has almost double the power, and where the absolute best expanding 380 ammo might barely meet the FBI's 12-18", they don't do so reliably, most top 9mm loads beat the tests easily. Problem is even the smallest 9s are a bit big for pocket carry, or clipping onto gym shorts without a belt. My CW380 is basically 5"x4"x.75" and 10oz, my PM9 and P365 are comparitively huge, fat, and weigh 15 and 18oz respectively. When I wear a belt, I carry a 9, when I don't or want to pocket carry, I take the p380.

My wife loves her S&W Shield 380 EZ. I confess it really is a ball to shoot. She also likes her big new 9mm CZ, but the 380 is, for her, a perfect pistol.
