If you could only stockpile three powders for a shtf situation what would they be and why? Needs to include a pistol powder.

    HoCo
3F Real Black Powder cause you can do some things with it as Doco mentions, not just hunt. And with a flintlock, you don't even need primers
Unique Pistol as well as some rifle usage
8208 XBR (works in most all Rifles I would use for hunt as well as defend)

I'll always say that the best way to stockpile is to place the powder into little brass cases with a lead cover on one end.

    IMR4064 and Unique.

My third would probably be 2400.

    Agreed.

IMR4064 works in nearly all Calibers

Unique works in nearly all Pistols

H4895 is a great powder (IMR4895 too)that is almost as good as 4064 but it can be used at ~60% reduced loads safely if you had to ration powder....

I’m not trying to thread jack but it’s along the same line of question as the OP’s, how long can powder be stored before any noticeable degradation in performance?

I don't know that anybody can put an exact figure on powder shelf life. I do know that cool and dry conditions are key to maximizing powder life.

I have personally used powder that I purchased over 30 years prior. Well over double that, for powder already loaded in cartridges.

H4895 for everything up to .30-06, H4350 for anything bigger than the '06 and Win 231 for handguns even though the magnums will be reduced power loads.

3F, red dot, and either 3031 or 4895

    3f. - muzzleloaders, 45-70, 45 colt, 44-40, 38-55, shotguns. Even 32 special. Lots of possibilities/ uses.

Red Dot. - shotguns, handguns, reduced rifle loads

3031 or 4895 - used in a lot different rifles.

If it was me, it would probably be Unique, 2400 and 4895, mainly because I know my dad used a lot of all three.

    Also very good choices!

4895 is on my list. I love 4350 but its too slow for it to be a universal powder, but if i could have a third it would be 4350.

231 is a good choice but I just prefer Unique for pistols and shotgun

One advantage with Unique it that is a good wide range shotgun powder.

    For what I shoot:

WW231 - most auto pistol loads.

H335 for 5.56 and other smaller cases. H4895 would also be good, it will run up to mid capacity or so. So will work 5.56 to .30-06

    Varget for .308//30-06

For the rifles I currently have, I would choose varget and H4350. Everyone's choice will be different based off rifles they own.
