    Hello everyone,
This is my first time post and I am going to be the first time rifle owner in MD.
I have read online about first time shooter. It is recommended that first timer should go with .22 caliber gun. But i cannot decide whether buying AR 15 5.56 and buy the conversion kit or buying AR15 22 lr? What is your opinion?
Also I saw that there is SIRT bolt that replaced BCG in AR15 platform for dry fire with laser at home and my question is can SIRT bolt be used with gun like AR 15 22lr? Thank you I would appreciate if anyone can chime in your opinion!

I have a dedicated CMMG 22 upper. It's great fun and works well.

Many folks use the conversion kits but .223 and .22LR are differing diameters which I've been told leads to accuracy issues. I haven't seen that first hand.

If you think you will want to shoot high power later, buy the AR15 and a conversion kit. I can shoot 2 inch groups at 50 yards from the bench with my CMMG conversion kit. Is it target grade accuracy? No but it is good enough to have fun with. 22LR costs much less than .223 which makes for more shooting enjoyment.

For the price of a .22 conversion upper, I would purchase a Ruger 10/22 and shoot away. When you get comfortable, you can then move to an AR platform.

I shot a .22 only a few times before enlisting. I really learned to shoot using an M-16. It has only a light recoil and is a solid platform for beginners. One of my sisters is 4' 8" and about 90 pounds and shoots .223 ARs with a passion. That is what she started with. It is a very versatile platform and allows you to easily change calibers as your future shooting interests develop.

Learning to shoot is not necessarily about the number of rounds you fire, but more about the accuracy as your skills progress. The .223/5.56 rounds are very consistent in their performance making evaluation of your progress easy to gauge.

If you get the .22 conversion kit for your training, it is easily sold when you no longer need it.

That said, everyone should have a .22 rifle. The 10/22 is very nice but I went with a Marlin 795. It shoots very nicely and is a lot of fun. There are a lot of inexpensive .22s that will work well for training yourself to shoot.

    I have 5.56mm AR15s, dedicated .22LR AR15s, two S&W 15-22 rifles, and several 10/22s. All great options.

One great feature of the AR15 platform is its modularity. You can easily swap uppers/lowers. If you buy a 5.56mm complete rifle (HBAR since it’s Maryland) you can then order a conversion kit or complete .22LR upper online direct to your home.

The posters above me have given some suggestions and you can’t go wrong with any of those paths. If you haven’t bought your rifle yet and are still thinking about it, consider doing the paperwork for your MD Collector Letter, which would allow you to purchase multiple firearms at once. Might not seem like a concern now for a new shooter, but probably no one on this forum hasn’t only one gun. :lol2: Purchase a few lowers from the MDShooters.com Industry Partner closest to your home or work, and then you can build your rifle or AR Pistol in any caliber at your leisure.

Get a nice .22. Either an AR15 platform type, or a Ruger 10/22 or Mossberg or Remington.

Do an Appleseed event to get good training to get you started.

    Then get an AR.

If you are set on an AR, I would do a dedicated upper versus a conversion. Rifling twist, and getting lead in the gas ports are the two things that would keep me away from a conversion.

Agreed. I would add a Savage to your shopping list. Of course, that would be a bolt gun...

I own a M&P15-22, for the price and it's reliability it is one of the best rimfire purchases I have ever made. I rarely jams and I shoot mostley ThunderBolts through it.... I shoot Steel Challenge w/ it and my friend and his daughter both have 15-22's and love them. We all came from 10/22's and we won't look back!

I know they are good guns, but every time I get near(buying) one, they look like a toy AR. I can't get past that. I wouldn't-couldn't pay more than $200 for one. BTW, I'm 61 and just bought my first 10/22. So that explains a lot. Lol

One issue with the 15-22 is, that at this time, they are banned from Appleseed events.

I like mine. But I would prefer to put a dedicated upper on one of my ARs. That way, I have my nice trigger. :D

Do you know the reasoning behind not allowing the 15-22? I know our Appleseed coordinator has done full caliber events using AR15's at some ranges on the Eastern Shore.

Multiple out of battery incidents. Just the S&W 15/22, not ARs in general.

My phone is being stupid trying to copy links, but Google "Appleseed 15/22" and you will get plenty of hits.

WOW! :wtf: The only dedicated AR22 I had even considered, because you could swap standard AR parts, was the S&W 15-22.

I'm glad I decided to stick with my CMMG (Ciener) conversion.

Would that be related to the bolt issue that S&W issued a recall over?

I talked to an S&W rep at the Great American Outdoors show. He stated that the rifles that had issues were not stock, and obviously so.

But also S&W would not say in public that it was an issue with their product.

But it was strange that the 15-22 was banned, and there was NO response from S&W for over a year.

We have 2 15-22s, and they are great, but I just picked up an ATI Omni H22 plinker. Hope to take it out to test this weekend.

Just over 3 1/2 months after your drive by first post, without having the courtesy to thank those that responded.
    Seems rather rude.:sad20:
