-Leaves up, gutters cleared, tractor winterized, snow blower fired. My self-imposed honey-do list was done on Saturday so I had all day Sunday to myself. Drove up to Redding to hang out with a good friend and check out an amazing catalog of early Marlin and Winchester rifles along with lots of collectible ammo and Winchester advertising.
-Big turnout, saw the guy from Commonwealth come in around noon and get bidder number 499. Plenty of phone bidding going on. The room had plenty of money with lots of older sporting rifle collectors. So I knew there was going to be thin pickings for a bargain hunter like me and I was right.
-Ammo prices were what you would expect in this case with a couple of boxes going in the high teens (Factory sealed box of ammo for a Henry, prob dated to the late 1800s sold for $1800 if my memory is accurate). I found a neat-o PJ O'Hare catalog from the early 30's and took it home with me for a Jackson and change. Also snagged some 50's vintage Winchester flyers for Winchester 75 and 63 rifles.
-With the smalls done we hung around until 2 pm, so I got to watch some firearm lots of interest sell. Been on the hunt for early Winchester .22 autos, Model 1903 and 63, and there was one of each. Both in good condition, they hammered for market value. I decided early to no-bid, gonna hold out for better. Watched a US marked Winder Musket sell for what I thought was the only bargain of the day up to that point. In fair-good condition (excellent bore) it hammered for $650. Well below market.
-There were some modern pistols and all sold for market or well above. A nice Whitney Wolverine stalled at $500 and I jumped in, smelling a bargain, but others also saw opportunity and it eventually went for $750, much closer to current market. A S&W 46 and a 52-1, both in box and immaculate examples, sold in the low to mid teens. Couldn't upgrade them so they didn't disappoint.
-Took some photos of the PJ O'Hare catalog, just too interesting for someone like me who is fascinated with accessories. Surprised to see he also sold Winchester rifles. Also snapped a couple photos of some of the Marlins. Didn't hang around for their sale, but expect they brought a good dollar.
