Beautiful Mosin rifle, brought to its potential by those wily Finns.

Remember, Mosin designed the rifle. He added the magazine designed by the Belgian revolver maker, Nagant.

... aaaaand the locals thought - and still think - that 'nagant' is old timey slang for a pistol of any kind. Doesn't have to be the revolver. Kind of how old gangster movies say piece, cannon, etc. The 't' is obviously silent.

The komissars during the revolution, on their way to pillaging the people and burning down the country, mostly carried the Nagant revolver and the name stuck. Only the ones really connected had a Broomhandle, even though that's what was typically captured by propaganda.

This here rifle is a 3 Line Rifle, or 'trehlineyka' as they say it.

Back home in Belgique, M. Nagannnnnnt was known for several other revolver designs. Maybe someone else knows how he came to design a rifle magazine.

The Finnish Model 1939 is many things, but a three line rifle it is not.

All Russian Mosins and Finnish Mosins are three line rifles. The Krag, 1903, M1917, 03A3, Garand, and M14 are also three line rifles.

The term "Line" or "Arshin" was a form of measurement in the late 19th century. One "Line" was equal to .100 inches.

Mosins have "Three Line" bores. Or a .300 bore.

A “line” is a unit of measurement (1/10”) used by the Russians. To say all .30 caliber rifles are “3 line rifles” may not be inaccurate if you’re talking about the bore diameter and are living in 1900 Russia but it’s not accurate if you are talking about what to call them and/or what their official designations were. This thread has devolved into one about official designations.

The phrase “3 Line Rifle” was actually part of the official designation of what we call a Model 1891 - “3 Line Rifle, Model of the Year 1891.”

The Model 91/30 was not called a 3 line rifle. Rather, its official designation was "7,62 mm Rifle, Model of the Year 1891-30".

    The M39’s official designation was “7,62 Kivääri m/39” or “7,62 Kiv/39”. 7,62 mm Rifle, Model 1939.

Finland referred to Russian M1891s by their Russian designation - “Russkaja 3-linejnaja vintovka obr. 1891 g”. Pretty much verbatim "Russian 3 line rifle mode 1891".

Later Finnish made 91s were named 7,62 Kiv/91. The Finnish 91/24s were "7,62 kiv/91-24" or the official "unofficial" name was Lotta Rifle.

Matching, non-matching doesn’t make a difference with these rifles (nor does import, since almost every - if not every - M39 in the country was imported after 1968). I don’t know anyone who cares about anything other than whether the bolt is Finn-matched. If any other part matches, it’s a bonus but no extra money goes into that. Nice, strong cartouche.

Nice! Thanks for the photos. Have a soft spot in my heart for M39s, esp. Sakos. Been on the hunt for a '41 straight stock Sako for years now.
