So the Dems pull a sweep in 2008 and get Obamcare, Dodd-Frank, and a whole bunch of other socialist garbage; we do the same and get tax and healthcare failures that would have been proposals of the Democrat party of 15 years ago. Got it.

They shouldn't give any awards. They had the Senate and the House for almost a year and they sat around twiddling their thumbs until Vegas happened and then they said "oh sorry, now we can't do anything."

Ryan's the one who should take the heat for that. As Speaker Of The House his support would have at least pushed it into the Senate's court.

Not to mention that the results of tonight (the margin of victory in Virginia is far bigger than expected) indicates that 2018 is going to be a bloodbath. We're almost certainly going to lose the House, and possibly the Senate too (even though we have a very favorable set of seats available next year). It's now or never. The Republicans will NEVER hold complete control of the government again, not in our lifetimes, at least not without a civil war.

I fear you may be right. The logic that the left's temper tantrums would create more support for the Republican party did not play out last night.

Let's hope that this is taken as a warning, and the party gets it together for 2018.

I think that the Democratic voters learned a lesson in 2016, even if you don't like the candidates, get out and vote.

VA has been lurching left for years. The election results aren’t much different than from a year ago. Trump voters stayed home. Dems came out harder and voted all the way down ballot.

That should be a massive wake-up call for those in other states. Just because your state may be pro-gun now, doesn’t mean it will be in a few years. Stay active. Keep educating.

I agree with the majority of this except for the part about Republicans holding complete control again. Someday it will happen because usually the party in power shits the bed and overreaches. Happened to the Democrats not long ago. Theo my reason the Republicans lost their ass in Virginia (and the potential to have the same thing happen nationwide) is because they put up candidates who are part of the establishment (which everyone is sick of) and they don't do what they said they would when they were elected so the voters that put them in office stay home. Note to Republican elected officials......DO YOUR F'ING JOB AND STOP APOLOGIZING, STOP WORRYING WHAT THE LEFT THINKS OF YOU.

The problem has always been that they spend all their time worrying about being reelected than doing what they were elected to do in the first place. That is why president Trump is forging ahead even with both parties working against him, he is worrying about this term and not the next.

Yup. Couple that with the media creating a false narrative about Trump and the Republicans, and independents are sold a lie. The leftist base was also very motivated.

Absolutely. For example, Washington state just flipped to full Democratic control. Watch bans on "assault weapons" and "high capacity mags" pass.

I actually think that will be the most interesting is when a formerly conservative/moderate states tries to flip from shall-issue to may-issue. I think Virginia has a good chance of being the first one.

That will be a very dark day. I always imagined PA being the first state to do that.

At the risk of sounding like an alarmist, the "overreach" effect seems to work on white voters, but not others. No matter the performance of the party in charge, non-white voters seem to vote for the Democrats by about an 80-20 margin. As more third world immigrants get citizenship, we'll eventually reach the point I described above.

Truthfully, I had forgotten about PA. But the fact that the AG letters to Congress against reciprocity were signed by the AGs of Pennsylvania, Virginia and North Carolina shows that Democratic politicians, even in formerly red places, don't mind fully embracing the progressive platform anymore. Like, why would NC and Virginia, which already accept all permits, oppose reciprocity except to make a point?

Which is why Republicans need to figure out how to connect to those voters...

How? They've been trying to decades. When the other party is telling them how special they are and deserve X for their skin color, and that whites are evil, it's an uphill battle.

It is an uphill battle, but I think sometimes the Republicans blow up the mountain to make it harder.

Some things I can think of:

Border security is an important part of immigration, but it's not the only part of immigration. I know we know the difference between illegal and legal immigration, but sometimes I question the optics of rallies of people chanting "Build the wall." Republicans could use their majorities to push for immigration reform across the board, addressing the long and complex process to legally immigrate, work visa processes to keep us competitive in the international market, and border security.

Try to make their messages about welfare less anti-welfare and more anti-welfare fraud. I know some people who welfare has helped, who had very little, and used government benefits and programs and now have masters degrees, own homes, gainfully employed, and giving back. I think more of a focus on welfare fraud would resonate with voters.

And lastly, remind them, esp the ones who left communist countries, that when you vote "R" you aren't voting for what you fled.

I think those are good steps, for sure, but when a voter's primary loyalty is the continued mass immigration of people who share his skin color, you're talking about an unloyal American to begin with. You're not going to change that by appealing to the rule of law.
