Time for a small update. I purchased about 500 rds of 1954-dated Ecuadorian 8mm ammo from another member last year.
Yesterday I took some of my arsenal, including the Mauser, to a range in WV. I also lugged two 50-lb sand bags with me for the first test shot.
I’m happy to report that not only did the gun fire the ammo, it was also surprisingly ‘accurate’ at 50yds using the less-than-optimal Lyman peep sights.
My daughter & I put about 75 rds through it and only had one round that refused to fire. Not bad for 66 year old ammo of questionable quality.
There were numerous instances where it was difficult to chamber a round smoothly (from the magazine). I’m not sure if it had to do with how the rounds were positioned in the magazine, or whether the action could use some massaging. Is there anyone on MDS who would be willing to tear it down and see if any surfaces need smoothing, etc.? I would obviously be more than happy to pay for this effort.
All in all, I’m thrilled that this old piece is functional.
