I have an 1873 Trapdoor Springfield, it's good condition but not great condition. I would like to find out how much it is worth. Some quick searches seem to show values between $1000 to $2500. Any suggestions where to find information would be appreciated. All the parts seem to be there, cleaning rod, barrel bands. All seems to be original.

    Look at this guy's stuff:
    http://www.trapdoorcollector.com/
compare what you have to what he is selling
    http://www.trapdoorcollector.com/springfieldarms.html

you could take pics and email him.

I met him and purchased my Trapdoor from him last Maryland collector's show that is in March.

If its a carbine, be careful cause the expensive trapdoors are in many cases the REAL carbines. Many were cut down and NOT the high $ ones.

Mine was about $950, wood was un sanded and in MINT condition. it was an 1884 built in 1891. Metal was aged but rifle was in storage a LONG TIME.

I wouldn't worry to much about metal below are some of the things to look for in trapdoors.

    - "patina" is ok as long as it isn't pitting.
    - Bore may be slightly dark but should have strong rifling, these guns ran black powder real shiny bores are rare
    - Stock without cracks is a premium
    - Cartouches add value
    - If its a model that had the folding bayo and comes with it bonus.

If all the above checks out and its mechanically sound $700 to $1000 is about market.

I wont touch carbines with a 10ft pole (or basically a 1873 rifle) way to many fakes unless you really know what you are talking about.

I sold a carbine, in decent shape, 2 years ago to a dealer at a Chantilly show for $1,200. I saw it on his table at the next show for over $2,000.
