    Semi auto 22lr , Ruger 10/22 or Marlin 60

    Lever 22lr (Henry)

Bolt action Rem 700, Ruger American, or equivalent in a mainstream medium caliber (243, 270, 308, 30-06)

AR style rifle (can still get an HBAR)

    Semi-auto 308 (Armalite 10 A4)

20 gauge rifled slug, semi-auto or pump (Remington 1187 or 870)

Mosin Nagant Carbine M38/M44/M59 (fires cheap 7.62 surplus rifle ammo) [I know you said no C&R but I still say you should get one]

I want a budget friendly precision rifle in a medium caliber, most likely .308win. I had been thinking of an R-700 build. Seeing how accurate off the shelf semi-autos can be nowadays though, I may opt for an AR10 build, or maybe an FNAR.

    can you be more specific??

I was deliberately being vague because everyone has a favorite brand of rifle and caliber for those applications and you didn't ask for specific models ;)

Personally, I went with a Remington 700 in 7mm-08 for the first bolt gun, I'm looking at getting a CZ or Ruger bolt gun in .416 Rigby for the second. I also picked a 10/22 for my .22 rifle and a Winchester 94 in .45 Colt for my lever gun.

An M1A or Ar10 ish EBR. They can hunt as good as anything and offer major firepower. A 22 in semi can also hunt as good as anything and lay down fire with the best of them. For survival the Rossi Matched pair shotgun / rifle setup is amazingly compact and with 22, slug, shot options covers all survival needs. Of course a good 12ga semi/pump can sling slugs so unless you are wearing an armored vehicle you are out of luck.

    aren't these banned??
Yes, they're banned... but you should be familiar with the endemic reading comprehension issues on MDS by now.

is the SCAR banned, why hasn't anyone mentioned it?
The SCAR is banned in factory config. It could be debanned fairly easily. I am not sure I would call it a MUST HAVE rifle. The only rifle that I think will turn into a broad MUST HAVE is the Beretta ARX-100.

Other personal MUST HAVEs for 2014 and 2015:
    1. Rem 870 MCS SBS
    2. Galil Micro w/ pinned comp to bring it to 29" OAL. (Remember, only the AR and ARM are banned, not the SAR or MAR.)
    3. Uzi Pro pistol (assuming it doesn't get caught up in the assault pistols for no good reason)
    4. PTR-32 PDW GenII SBR (not an HK-91 clone)
    5. Nite Scout A3 SBR (not an HK-94 clone)
    6. AR-10 (if they look like they're getting banned)

    Must have rifle selection:

Bolt action .22lr.Remington 541-S or 541-T come to mind. (Have to settle for used - they're no longer made.)

    Semi-auto .22lr. Ruger 10/22.

    Lever action .22lr. Marlin 39a

Bolt action centerfire. Remington 700 in .223/5.56x45mm and also in .308/7.62x51mm. If a larger caliber is needed, look at the .338 WinMag.
(Savage could be interchaged if you like Savage.)
There's still NOTHING 'wrong' with a K98k Mauser!

Lever action centerfire. Marlin (pre-Remlin/Marlington) in .44 magnum and Marlin .45-70.

    Semi-auto centerfire. AR10 in .308/7.62x51mm. AR15 in .223/5.56x45mm.
    (IF you're out-of-state, M1A/M14 platform!)

Ruger 10/22 - everyone should have one
Bolt action, precision (not hunting) .30 caliber rifle, .308, .30-06., .300 WM, etc
HBAR -whatever you can find/buy, but my preference is for a Colt
Bolt action, precision .22 rifle for practice
Mosin Nagant - because the are cheap and fun
    Ruger Mini-14
Garand - if you want .308, get a converted one

    ^^^^Garand.

As I've gotten older, my M1 Garand has sat more and more, in my safe, without being used.

I've thought very seriously about selling it and the M2 Ball that I have.

    The only reason(s) I haven't.........

It IS a piece of history.
My youngest son said that of all of my firearms, he wants to one-day have that M1 Garand, more than anything else in my humble collection!!!!

You'll regret it. Dont sell it! Love it, play with it, sleep next to it!
