What do you prefer and why for hunting/recreational use?

aperture only is good with good lighting. Not good for hunting during dusk hours. Helps with accuracy but only if you can see.
I like aperture for target shooting though.

I have a win 75 with lyman apperature sites i shot on hi schoolrifle teams. Very precise, more so than open sites. But as melnic points out, not so good in poor light, but you can use a larger apperature or remove the screw in disc and use the receptacle in lieu.

I have an extremely difficult time unless it's an open sight. If anyone has a high visibility rear aperture (AR15) let me know. I'll take it off your hands.

Oh...and I'm only 43 so imagine what it will be like in 20 years.

Take the aperture out of the housing and the housing serves as a ghost ring. Will let in a lot more light. For me it allows a better look at the target. Use this set up on my muzzle loader, a Marlin 1895 and a henry .22.
