I have a Norinco model of the 1911a1.

What is your best recommendation for a lubricant on this old thing?

First of all, they aren't that old. 2nd, they were used to make some nice pistols.

Mobil 1 oil works well on most firearms. Make sure you clean out the firing pin, extractor tunnel before shooting it.

I have one too. Anything will do it seems. I use clp or Mobil 1 synthetic oil

On the 1911, I use grease on the hammer and sear mating surfaces, on the barrel lugs and on the mainspring and its cup. Everything else gets Mobil One synthetic oil.

If you clean it every time you shoot it, use oil. If you want the lube to stay on the firearm for a longer period of time, use a light grease. I normally use lithium grease for guns that get shot less often. Whatever motor oil you use in your vehicle is fine for your firearm and since you are using just a little, motor oil is very inexpensive over time.

Most of us clean our guns far more often than necessary. We do it out of habit or for our enjoyment. Some guns run better with very little lube and others with a little bit more. Most guns don't need as much lubrication as we use.

I have a sonic cleaner from HF that I use occasionally but non-chlorinated brake cleaner and mineral spirits are my normal cleaning products. I cut up old denim jeans into cleaning rags. A little mineral spirits, denim rag, and some elbow grease will take off just about any surface rust. Mineral spirits and a stiff nylon bristle brush will clean just about anything other than wood.

If you know how the firearm operates and can see the wear locations on the parts, you will know where to clean and where to lubricate.

    OP here,

I am an old fart fellas, going on 70 and this pistol will be probably rarely fired and mainly stored in a bedroom pistol safe ready for protective purposes.

How would you keep it lubed if that were the case for you?

Oil for parts the rotate. Grease for parts that slide.

For long term, synthetics are less likely to gum up.

    Lightly lube and enjoy.

For my carry and house protection guns. I lube them and then wipe all the excess lube with a paper towel. Work the slide a few times and wipe again.

I don't wipe them with a silicone or oil cloth because I don't want slick guns if I have to use one in a hurry.

Metal on metal, slide to frame eg, grease. Like the white stuff in a syrng. Use it on sig 220, 226 and 1911 pistols.

Based on your stated intention, I would use a light coat of white lithium grease on the slide rails and the barrel link. I would leave everything else clean and dry. Put a silica gel dessicant pack in the safe with the pistol. Check the weapon, including the magazine and stored ammunition once a month to be certain there is no moisture or rust developing inside the safe.

I've started using this as a GP lube and coating. No mess.

3 n 1 oil from the hardware store it comes in a nice little bottle to keep in your range bag. When I do clean a 1911 and that is not to often i assemble it back with ATF ( amsoil) . I dont clean my 1911 s but every 800 or so rounds but I lube them every-time I shoot them.

I love BreakFREE CLP, but...it depends on where you'll be shooting. Mobil 1 synthetic is fine, too, but if you'll be shooting in a dry, dusty environment, I'd give MILITEC-1 Dry Impregnated Lubricant a try. The thing is, most lubricants attract dust and grit. MILITEC-1 goes on wet, then dries (especially if you have a hair dryer). It won't protect your guns against rust and corrosion, but your gun will work in all sorts of dust and grit environments.
