My son took the course and passed it 2 years ago at age 8. He scored 100% on the written exam. My 6, soon to be 7, year old is chomping at the bit to take it. My son and I made the drive down to Sanner's Lake Sportsman's Club in late September to take the course. It was a Saturday and Sunday, and it did not take up the entirety of either day. Seems pretty simple to me.

Available field days in Maryland after taking the online course. Looks like there are openings on the 14th of September.

OP, good luck with this. Hope you are actually able to track down your HS card info. I was able to get my brother's HS card from DNR after a couple of decades had passed since we took the course together.
