October 7th One-Day Appleseed at Leetown Gun Club, Kearneysville, WV

The weather was gorgeous for the twelve (12) shooters that showed up at the Leetown Gun Club, (IWLA), in Kearneysville, WV for a Single-day Appleseed Rifle Marksmanship Clinic.

Of the 12 students, 5 were Boy Scouts, and there was 2 other youth shooters. Many were first-time shooters, and most were first-time Appleseeders! It's so exciting to see a Sold-out line with so many new, eager shooters! There were eight loaner rifles on the line too, making it challenging to get going, but the students were raring to go!

After the introductions and safety brief, we did the first Red-coat target, then we got the First Strike in early. Students were enthralled with the history and very engaged. We then moved right into prone Steady-Hold Factors (SHF) and putting sighters on the Squares target... we were excited to see progress on this eager group! After some history at lunch, we got back to marksmanship training - as the day progressed, groups were improving. Being it was a one-day event, we had to move along smartly; after Standing and Seated/Kneeling SHF, we got a practice AQT in, and then went to the final Redcoat as we were out of time. We finished up with the Third Strike, and sometimes people are a little tired and 'less-than enthusiastic' at the end of the day, but not this bunch, they wanted to know how it turned out, an much interesting discussion ensued. One of the Leetown GC representatives, who has helped us so many times before, took a Blue Hat to become an Appleseed volunteer, Thanks Gordon G!

We had one Riflemen re-qualify and join the WV list. Jeff F. put up a 242, and earned another Rifleman Patch; great score Jeff! Seven youth shooters earned their Luther Blanchard Patch, as we explained that a Rifleman Persists! All the shooters maintained a fabulous attitude, huge improvements were made, and everybody had fun, too!

    Huzzah!
Thank you very much to our host range, the Leetown Gun Club, (IWLA), in Kearneysville, WV.
    Check out their website here.

And last but not least, many thanks to my fellow instructors ABCgarand and Aninha, whose positive attitudes, hard work, and professional demeanor made this a safe, fun, and successful shoot.

Keep an eye on the Project Appleseed event site for West Virginia for future events.

    Wondering about the prohibition:
EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY THE USE OF SMITH AND WESSON M&P 15/22’S AT AN APPLESEED ARE HEREBY TEMPORARILY PROHIBITED DUE TO RECENT SAFETY ISSUES.

Both my kids train with is a DPMS version 15/22. My kids shoot 300 to 400 rounds EACH at 340 defense in 3-4 hours and never seen the "out of battery" discharge as discribed by Appleseed on the Smith & Wesson 15/22...does it mean all 15/22?

    S&W MP15/22

    planktonadbc -
Are your rifles "DPMS" 15/22s built with DPMS Uppers?
My understanding is the ban is only on the S&W MP15/22. If you have a DPMS Lower with S&W upper, I'll need to verify. I think you're OK, but want to be sure.

Ironically, one of the original failures that caused the ban happened with our (Maryland) crew, so I'm familiar with the issue (there were many others, too).

I am the Shoot boss for the upcoming event in WV.

    Thank you for your response.
My kids really enjoy range time with my wife and I.
Yes, both my kids use 22LR DPMS uppers (from Brownells) with Tennessee Arms lower.
The upper is a real DPMS 22 LR barrel and bolt specific to handle the 22LR, not a conversion bolt they sell to use a 556 barrel. The DPMS has a block/spring carrier within the upper for the action. Does not use the buffer/spring system for a 556.
They could shoot 556 by just changing the upper out. Etc.

    One-Day in Kearneysville - 16 June 2018

The weather was incredibly beautiful for the ten shooters that showed up for a Single-day Appleseed Rifle Marksmanship Clinic at the Leetown Gun Club, (IWLA), in Kearneysville, WV.

Of the ten shooters, we had nine first-time Appleseeders! We were very happy to see a full line with so many first-timers! After the introductions and safety brief, we got the First Strike in early, and then did the first Red-coat target. Four shooters cleaned their Redcoats! Huzzah!
We had one Riflemen re-qualify; Aaron put up a 227 and backed it up with a 231. Nice shooting Aaron! A first-time Appleseeder, Jeremiah, earned his Rifleman Patch with a 214, and backed it up with a 219. Several shooters were in the 196-206 range, and very close! One youth shooter earned his Luther Blanchard Patch, as we explained that a Rifleman Persists! All the shooters maintained a fabulous attitude, huge improvements were made, and everybody had fun, too!

Thank you very much to Jerry and our host range, the Leetown Gun Club (IWLA), in Kearneysville, WV.

And last but not least, many thanks to my fellow instructor Aninha, whose great attitude, hard work, and professional demeanor made this a safe, fun, and successful shoot. And by the way, Aninha earned her Red Hat! Huzzah!

Are these events RimFire only? Current schedule doesn't have any listings for Kearneysville and since I live in FDRK, it's an easy drive... Would prefer to shoot my AR if possible.
