    Honestly if you want to go complex, might as well just use a pneumatic shock absorber as the buffer. Make it adjustable and done.

    Complex?

    Let's add a speed sensor for the buffer so the dampening can be electronically controlled. As the speed sensor gets the input from any type of ammo, it can open or close holes in the damper shim stack as needed to provide the right amount of buffering. The same sensor can be used to detect the speed that the buffer returns to adjust the new magnetic spring system for returning the buffer... and adjust the amount magnetic tension electrically.

    This laser gun is gonna be so sick! :D

    We could also modify the hydrauiic buffer. Fill it with the same material electronic regulated shocks use. Vary the stregth of the magnetic field will change the “thickness” of the material from oil like to full lock up. Change the size/strength/proximity of the magnet in the buffer will affect dampening. Fail safe is like no magnet - regular fluid hydraulic dampening.
