Decided to put a pistol grip on the 870. I have a mag extension but its an eight shot and extends past the barrel. It bugged me so I took it off

It may not be a $1k+ Beretta or Kreighoff, but we added another shotgun today. My son, at the ripe old age of 8, has decided he's ready for a shotgun. I'll have company in the cleaning of the guns, and he'll have something to do now, rather than just watch:

I have to share. I just got it today from a friend of ours over on Marylandwhitetail.com. Remington 870 Express Magnum, cantilever rifled barrel, and the 3x9/40 Redfield scope came on it. I am thinking about putting the Remington Sureshot stock and forearm on it. I love the grip on that stock.

    You're not gonna like this:

The Winchester 1400 does not have a plug, so it cannot be removed. There is only room for 2 shells, unlike the 1200/1300 pump which can hold 4 shells with the plug removed. The end of the magazine tube is where the gas piston is installed. If you look at the tube, you will see that it is crimped about half way down, separating the tube into two sections. One section acts as the magazine while the other acts as the gas cylinder (used to operate the action upon firing).

To remove the gas piston, unscrew the magazine cap, insert a screw driver into the recoil spring and hold it towards the butt of the gun. The pin connecting the carrier to the piston can then be pulled up and out. WARNING: WITH THIS PIN REMOVED, THE PISTON AND RECOIL SPRING ARE FREE TO FLY OUT OF THE MAGAZINE TUBE WITH MUCH FORCE! MAKE SURE YOU RESTRAIN THE PISTON AND SPRING PROPERLY! The piston and recoil spring are removed from the front of the magazine tube.
Ahhhh, This is very interesting. I have never read this far back in the thread to see this, but explains why I could never get that plug out.

BTW, I have very similar gun for sale right now in the Marketplace if anyone is interested. It is the (Winchester 1400) "Ted Williams" model 300, semi-auto 12ga. Very Nice Cond.

Just something different for those that want some fetish type porn. Below is a pic of my Savage Arms Kimel Kamper, Model KKI, break open single shot, 20 ga., 18.5 inch barrel,27.5 inch overall length. Marked along the top of the barrel "DO NOT FIRE FROM SHOULDER", which is kind of ironic as it has a sight notch in front of the hammer and bead on the end of the barrel. Sighting it from the shoulder puts the hammer right at your eye and would probably cause some serious sighting issues after firing that way. Butt of stock has a compartment that holds 2 extra shells. The only thing I know about it is that they were made in 20 & 410 gauges for a couple of years in the early 80's and the kids love to shoot it so they can tell their friends they shot a "sawed off" shotgun. I bought it about 10 years ago as an inexpensive, what the heck purchase. The wood has been refinished and metal has about 75% of the original finish with no rust. I have done some net searches but can not find out much about it. If anyone has any more info on it, (# made, collectability, value, etc) please let me know.

Pick one up! There are a million options to play around with! I still have alot I would like to do to mine, just put a S&J follower in it today. Tactical stock is next!

I was just on gallery of guns looking at a 870police with 18.5 inch barrel, +2 extension (so 6+1) and rifle sights . . .the other tabs I had open at the same time was the XS big dot Remington shotgun rifle sight set, and my newly created midwayusa wish list with all the new magpul 870 furniture in FDE, bit safety, and other odds and ends :party29: I was very, VERY tempted to click BUY NOW on everything. :D But I also had a tab open with the BCM lower and associated parts I need to build it to pair with my BCM upper I got a few months ago. . .one day I will get the shotty

I've got some lazy pictures of my '25 1897 if you guys are interested.

    Mutt says hi.
    IMG_0191.jpg

The last owner cut it down to 18 on the nose, which I'm not happy with but, for 80 bucks at a yard sale I'm not really complaining.
    IMG_0192-1.jpg

Here's my ghettofied sling-mount mock up.
    IMG_0193-1.jpg

And unfortunately for 80 bucks, you can't get a perfect shotgun every time.
    IMG_0194.jpg

The barrel is bulged a little here, as if someone shot a rifled slug through it or something, and the white is very clearly where someone tried to hammer it down, but my smithy says it's safe to shoot gentle field loads for the time being, and also says it should be able to handle just about everything modern in 2-3/4" that isn't above magnum when he's finished with it.

I'm considering sending it off to get a good parkerizing job, getting a brass bead added, and re-finishing the wood once I get the bulge fixed since the value was already ruined by the previous owner when he cut the barrel off.

hopefully I'll end up with something like this when I'm all finished with it.
