I'm in the market for quality jags and loops that are safe for use with Wipe Out. For those of you not familiar with this particular snake oil, it dissolves copper and nickel, so the jags/loops shouldn't contain those metals or alloys thereof.

Midway has some nice Dewey and Tipton hardware, but it's all brass or nickel plated. I'd really like to avoid plastic jags if possible, but I can live with plastic loops easily enough.

So, what say the all knowing members of MDS? If plastic is the only way forward, who makes stuff worth owning?

I am partial to the Tipton jags and bore brushes in brass. I bought a set last year and have been very happy with them. The quality is absolutely the best!

If you don't shoot Bullseye or CMP High Power or Bench Rest, you will probably do better with a bore snake. It will clean the gunk out of your barrel and will not mar the throat or crown. Contrary to popular belief, copper build up doesn't affect the accuracy enough to bother the average shooter. If you are a MOA or less shooter, then it would affect your scores.

As for copper cleaners, they won't make your jags dissolve unless you leave them in the jar. I have been using brass jags and patch holders since I was a kid and still have some originals. Just wipe them off when you are finished and they will last a long time. BTW, never dunk any copper material in your cleaner bottle as it will lesson its effectiveness over time.

That is quite impressive and runs counter to what had previously thought. I didn't figure they would just melt away instantly, but I would have thought certainly over time and with continued exposure that it would become a problem.

I have a bore snake for my waterfowl gun and generally call it "clean enough" at the end of a hunt after a few pulls through. For other firearms, I'm generally a little more thorough with my cleaning, though certainly not abusive.

A new outlook on the matter. Thanks!

I've been using the Tipton plated jags with Wipeout for years and they haven't been affected. I just wipe them off with a paper towel or rag when done.
Sharp Shoot-R, the manufacturer of Wipeout, says it will not harm chrome or nickel.

    From the company's FAQ:
    http://www.sharpshootr.com/faqs/
"1. question: Will Wipe-Out, Patch-Out, or Tactical Advantage harm a chrome lined barrel ?
answer: There are no caustic chemicals in these cleaners that can harm chrome.
Also there are no chemicals that can harm nickel plated firearms.

I could have sworn that Wipe-Out wasn't safe for nickel, and I even went to their site before posting here. As always, reading is fundamental.

    Thanks for posting!

Some use Brake Cleaner to clean their brushes & jags after using I have used Kerosene in a small amount and just place the brush in the solution wipe & put it away till the next session--with Wipe-Out or any copper solvent and find that they last as long as can be expected
