Haven't shot it yet, but plan on adding it to the calibers I reload for. Anyone have any experience with one? Any powder recommendations?

    Unique. 231. Trail Boss.

Use light bullets and light charges to lessen the recoil.

The Colt 1851 isn't that strong. Due to not having a top strap like the '58 Remington.

Personally, I'd stick with black powder. Or its equivalent.

Oh , you mean your M1872 Open Top, from your other thread. To be historically purist, those were built that way at the factory, rather than converted. They were probably vastly outnumbered by conversions of 1851's .

The modern Italian Replicas are anachronistic in that the factory purpose built guns were in .44 Henry Rimfire. The actual conversions generally reused original bbls. The most common ctgs for those conversions would have been either .38Rimfire, or .38 Short Colt, both of which used heeled bullets in their original form .

The simple answer is use whatever std pressure .38spl loading you otherwise would care to use.

To evoke the spirit of the times, use either 129gr LRN (.38SC) or 150gr LRN (.38RF) , loaded to 650-700fps . Most powders faster than Unique, plus Trail Boss, plus 5744 will get you there. ( 129grs seems light for cal by 20th Cen standards, but by being close to the weight of .36 conicals used in cap&ball form, the sight height would have provided similar POI . High by modern standards, but what c&b users were familiar with.)

To Really evoke the spirit of the times, use FFFG.

No. The 1872 Open top has the front sight notch in the barrel directly in front of the cylinder.

The 1851 conversion has the front sight notch in the hammer, viewable best when the hammer is cocked back and not in the barrel like the 1872.
