I am the king of Wal-Mart rattle camo.
Rustoleum and Krylon both give good results. The trick is to let the paint dry thoroughly before serious handling. As in a couple of weeks. A fan helps to drive off the volatiles.
I clean/degrease with acetone. Surface prep is key. Then use a dark reddish brown primer for woods camo. Gray primer for urban camo. Again, let it dry. Apply paint in thin layers with thorough drying between coats. Thick coats may seem dry, but will soften and smudge when handled. And paint won't stick to Magpul rubbery grips.
Have fun.
And if does get bumped or rubbed off a bit through use, it's camo. Adds to the camoiness.
