I'm going to start reloading soon after doing plenty of reading.

I'm just looking for an idea of which COMMONLY AVAILABLE powder to try first.

I will be reloading supers (120gr) and subs out of a short pistol barrel. I see some powders can be used for both supers and subs, and I'd like to do that if it works well.

    Thanks!

AA1680 for subs, H110 or Lil Gun for supers.

H110 can (and likely will) make a mess being so fine, but it's great for 300BO with the lighter pills.

Same, worked great with 110gr Vmax and 225gr Amax. 12.5" and 16" barrels.

And no matter how snugly I had everything adjusted, still managed to leak thru. Became annoying to lose a set amount during a session, but I had better velocities compared to Lil Gun in the same loads.

Is there any reason not to just use one powder that works for both? I'm just leaning towards that so I can stock less stuff.

H110 or Lil Gun CAN be used for supers and subs, but may not generate enough gas to reliably cycle the action w/out suppressor - even on pistol-length gas systems.

1680, it's what they used out of the gate for subsonic use. Generates plenty of gas, can be dirty due to the filler.

by the way, this WILL be suppressed but I would like to have supers cycle unsuppressed if possible.

I also would want enough velocity for good terminal ballistics for hunting with supers

As far as subs go, the primer is as important as the powder for consistent velocities.

    can you elaborate?
Always better to use hotter primers for subs. Subs contain half the powder(more or less) than standard loadings. Often that powder is either lying flat in the cartridge or is shoved forward in the case as a result the cartridge being slammed into the chamber as in a semi-auto. All this causes space between primer initiation and contact with the powder.
Will your subs still go bang using standard primers? Yes, but the goal should be to gain the highest, most consistent velocities without stepping over the subsonic threshold occasionally.

So, bench, magnum, or military primers are preferred.

FWIW the 220gr RN pills I use for subs take up all the "air space" so even with 1/2 the charge the case is still full of powder. I use the same CCI 450 primers for super/sub BO as I do for .223.

Also FWIW, A1680 is the only sub powder that I found that would cycle my carbine gas system without the can.. From my testing the gas system, buffer spring and buffer are the most important items in sub cycling

    CCI450s are magnum primers.

And basically the same as the military primers, except for the cup to anvil distance.

CFE BLK is good for sub and super. It's the only powder I use for my 300 blackout loads.

Wonderful powder, really forgiving, and good function across the weight ramge, most loads are compressed. Only problem is few places carry it, so had to go back to H110/296 for supers and AA1680 for subs when I couldn't find any locally. IMO if you insist on one powder for both, and BLK isn't available, AA1680 is better in supers than H110 is in subs. It is a caliber that pretty much requires magnum primers too.

I have been shooting the 300 BO for some years now in a 16 inch carbine gas set up. I have no problem using standard SR primers with h110 or Lil Gun. In .44 Magnum pistol, I use magnum primers to get better burn efficiency but I have never had a problem in the 300BO. Perhaps pistol gas setups and pistol length barrels may need magnum primers but I don't see the need in a carbine.

Oddly enough I am getting horrible results with 220 subs and cfe BLK. Like 150 fps deviation in velocity consistently. I'm going back to 1680.
