There are a lot of places with Military Information depending on what you are looking for. To get you started here is Cyndi's List of "United States » U.S. Military » Records: Military, Pension, Burial, Casualties" its 6 pages contains 189 links to sources of records and information:
    http://www.cyndislist.com/us/military/records/

Cyndi's List is an index of Genealogical sites on the Internet. Here is Cyndi's list of Genealogy Categories and each category shows the (number) of links and when last updated:

I have copies of two great grandfathers Civil War Records. Another resource I have been using to help some new genealogists is the WW I Draft records, you can find images of their Draft cards online. Here is a link, and most young men registered for the draft (in WW I) even if they did not serve:

Thanks for the links, I actually found my Great-Great Grandfather's (the father of the GG in question) draft card from WWI using that site. He never ended up getting drafted though.

That's him. I have a picture of the Musket somewhere but I can't find it. I've got half a mind to offer the museum curator a "donation" for it, but like Indiana Jones said "It belongs in a museum!".

His brother was famous for being the first person to cast a cannon in the New World in order to supply them for the Continental Army. The British put a price on his head and he barely got away. Apparently they came rushing through the front door of his house and he ran out the back door and escaped.

84, back in those days that was REALLY a ripe old age! Good luck with your search, slim to none though.

I know my only WWII vintage M1 is in the 800k range, short of what you're looking for. Good luck on the adventure, you never know what path it's going to put you on!

This website collects boot camp and cruise book pictures for Marine veterans. I found a picture of my (step) grandfather from his combat engineer class in 1943. It's worth looking up your great grandfather to see if you'll find any pictures or information.

I am not biologically related to my grandpa, so I can't request records. You're lucky to have his.

Welp, Bittersweet update on the search for my Great-Grandfather’s service rifle.

I sent in a serial number request to the CMP earlier this week and got a call from a nice lady out of the CMP South store. She informed me that at one time they did have my Great-Grandfather’s rifle, but it had been converted into a drill rifle and was sent to some kind of Ceremonial Drill Unit in 2014. I couldn’t get any of the Units information. She said I could send a letter every 6 months or so in case they ever get it back in.

4 years late. I feel stupid for not sending in the request sooner, but I feel good knowing that the rifle is still floating around out there instead of not having any information at all. Maybe someday I’ll be able to get my hands on it, drill rifle or not, I don’t mind.

Thanks for the link! It probably would be worth sending an email asking about it. Hopefully they’ll be willing to give me some information on it.

Maybe reach out to them and let them know you would buy a replacement for them in exchange for your grandfathers. Worth a shot. All they can say is no.
