I use a Dremel tool to sharpen chain saw, mower, and other garden tools. Have used it on the machete with good success. The guide kit that they sell works very well. Good blades are done by hand on an Arkansas stone and strop.

I was looking at the Dremmel sharpening kit as well. I believe Home Depot has it for around $14. I have an Ontario US issue machete that I want to sharpen.

My surveyor's machete likes bastard file work till you can't see any reflection on the edge, as you look at it face on. Then I use a long diamond knife sharpener, and finish the edge off with a ceramic knife sharpener or a barber's leather strop.

You bums! Because of this thread I went and bought the puck and the Dremel kit.

By the way, thanks! They both work great.

+1 Won't heat the steel and ruin the temper like a grinder.

    Good luck

I have an old electric knife grinder, that is mounted on a metal stand in my basement. It has a water reservoir that lubes the grinder wheel. The grinder wheel rotates so slow that it does not destroy the temper of a knife.
