Anyone here fish with a kayak? Looking for advice on what style and length to go with. I fish some small, slow creeks and a few small ponds and lakes.

I like the sit on top because I feel I'd be able to move my legs around and people say they're more stable.

However, the sit in would be nice in cooler temps to keep the water from splashing on me and to keep gear dry.

Something like this would be nice.

Seems too good to be true for the price.

I've been eyeing this one for years, just too cheap to buy it lol.

Old school kayaker, sit on are stable in flat water but all primary roll with little secondary stability. What that means, hard to tip over but once its starts you are getting wet. Sit in kayaks typically have great secondary stability but seem like they are tippy. That tippy adds to maneuverability and speed. They are actually stable as that secondary stability makes it a bit harder to tip in rougher water.

Ok, for fishing, open nice platform to fish from. For any distance kayaking and in more choppy water, sitin is way to go

Sit on... me and my GSP have no issues on the river on a windy, rough day.. You can/may get wet, but.. it's summer... you won't melt. Besides, if you are gonna fish, be prepared to get a little wet either way.. :lol2:

I just bought the F&S one you have linked but the sit in model. I haven't had it in the water yet. Hoping to try it out next week for the first time.

I have an old Ocean kayak, before fishing kayaks were popular, it's a sit on and very stable. I have never tipped it and I have been out on some rough water. You may get spray, or wash in the scuppers, but I prepare to be wet when I'm out in a kayak and I have fitted it with a rod holder so I can fish it better now. It's a two person, so I have plenty of room for gear.. and a dog at times.. lol

I just picked up a future beach trophy 126 (identical to first link). From a coworker.

With the dihedral hull it is VERY stable and easily tracks straight. I was always a canoe guy, and picked this up on a whim. Money well spent. Light enough to carry short distance to get into little backwater creeks.
I'm 6foot and 200 plus, and it doesn't feel "tight" at all. And with me and gear it only draws 6ish inches of water with out scraping the mud to get over low tide channel.
I normally go out local in feeder creeks of Marley, and Furnance creeks.

My local DSG has that one for 250 right now which is a smoking deal. Really debating it.

+1. I didn't fish in mine, but it is the coolest kayak on the water. Paddle it if you want, pedal it and fly through the water at up to 6mph while keeping your hands free, or add a sailing rig (and wish you hadn't).

    Awesome boat.
I am envious of the alternative power mode, that is sweet! and... I'd add a sail, I'm a sailor at heart... lol

I believe it would make a GREAT entry level fishing kayak. And that is a good deal. Bought mine for $100 cash and some ammo. It was only in water couple times before I got and and I am VERY pleased with it.

been fishing out of a shadow caster 123 for a bit over a year. Starting to upgrade it a bit with more rod holders, a fishfinder, anchor trolly etc.

Lol....I've been known to be an influence.....sometimes good, sometimes bad.....lol..

I don't think you can go wrong with either of your picks.
And only suggestion I'm not sure of is the Hobie....looks like it would really effect shallow water travel, but I have absolutely no experience with such a kayak.

I gave my last boat to my nice about six years ago and started kayak fishing due to my bad back. I love it and fish the same spots that I did in my boat. Severn river, Love point, BB, TPL etc. I have a Ocean Kayak Trident 13, modified some but a great kayak. There are better, but none that weigh 66 pounds in my price range. I moded mine by putting a trolling motor on the rudder post so when the wind and tide turn the wrong way, I can still get home.

Sit on top is the only way to go for our kind of fishing. I paddled sit ins for some years for recreation and, unless you are hunting whales with a spear, they don't do too well with a rod and reel.

Come on over to www.snaggedline.com, the Maryland fishing kayak site. It truly is lots of fun.
