Single shot Cricket is a great .22LR to start a kid on the path to the shooting sports. It will fit them better, and a simple bolt action single shot is good to get them to focus on each and every shot as well as inherently a bit safer.

Recently picked up a CZ 457 Scout for my 9-yr old who's outgrown his Chipmunk, but still benefits from a shorter length of pull. Here are some size comparisons.

Oregon Arms Chipmunk (really great size for my kid from ages 7-9 ... Cricket is almost the same size) ...

Winchester Wildcat (I've had 11-13 year olds shoot this rifle well, offhand/standing; it's very lightweight) ...

CZ 513 Farmer/Basic (13 and up shoot this rifle well, they need more arm strength to support it) ...

CZ 455 Varmint with 17-inch bull barrel ...

My 8 year old has been shooting my Winchester model 61 that was handed down to me and will be handed down to him some day. He is really good with it off a bench.
