Non-chlorinate brake cleaner and a nylon brush. If it’s still not coming out, it’s not cosmoline that’s in there...

Kinda what i was thinking, I would use some good bore cleaner and a brush, Nylon or Brass

do not over look bolt carrier and fire pin cosmoline .

This is true. My first was a lightly used Norinco (well, lightly used since imported). No cosmoline. Disassembled the bolt and there was still cosmoline in the firing pin channel and on the firing pin after about 25 years and supposedly only about 200rnds down the pipe in those years.

For any nubes, this is because that firing pin is floating and stuck cosmo can cause slam fires. not just initially but can happen down the road turning it from semi to full auto

YouTube has some great videos on how to take that apart. You do need a punch.

    DON'T NEGLECT IT!!!!!!!!!!

What’s a good method of getting cosmoline out of the bore? It’s been heated and shot, cleaned with bore cleaner many times, but that stuff won’t come out!

If you take boiling water and pour it down the barrel, it will remove all of the cosmoline. Be sure to put some through the gas port, too. Using boiling water will also cause it to evaporate quickly and leave the metal virtually dry. Anything remaining will be debris or damage.

I have used JB's Bore paste to clean debris from a couple of barrels and recently discovered the Big45 cleaning pad. If you cut some of it off and wrap it around a bore brush, it will clean without causing damage to the barrel and remove things left behind by other cleaning methods. For one particularly rough shotgun barrel, combining the Big45 and JB's cleaned it up nicely.

If you are finding cosmoline elsewhere, then perhaps more cleaning is needed using boiling water and Dawn. Removing it completely from the stock may take several heat cycles to leach it out, but can be accomplished.

PSA: Never fire a gun with anything in the barrel including excess oil! It is a good way to ring a barrel or worse. Running a dry patch through the barrel before shooting would be recommended if the rifle is new to you, has been stored or may have excess oil in the bore. A visual inspection of the bore is also recommended.

Thanks for the brake cleaner advice. It worked like a charm. Just a few wet patches and it cleaned up nicely.
