It looks like there is high demand for TS/SCI. Do you guys know what exactly I would have to do to get the clearance? How did you get it if you have it?

This is a long and involved process. You will need to get someone (a company or Government agency) to pick you up, or "sponsor" you first. It can take up to (or over) a year to get your paperwork in, wait for the investigation to be completed, and then adjudicated. You can't just "get" one. There has to be a need, so as I said you will need a sponsor first. Normally this costs in the neighborhood of $35-$50K from start to finish, but it just depends. With that said, once you do get one......life can be very good.

Get a job that requires you to be cleared.

Typically, it is one of those chicken or the egg kind of deals because the process is time consuming and expensive (for the employer or their contracting authority).

There are exceptions if you have a highly desirable skillset.

+1... Need to be hired first in a job requiring a clearance. There is a backlog currently on clearances... In other words it can take forever... Good luck.

Join the Military as an Intel type and you will get a TS/SCI at the very least.

You don't need to be intel, but yes, TS/SCI or even TS/SSBI can make you very desirable in the job market... having an active clearance is like having a bucket of gold, being previously cleared, not as great but still a tin of silver. The TS/SCI with lifestyle poly, that's platinum and a real ticket to ride. You'll find that there are other clearances as well that are valuable.

Expect your family to be freaked out by the investigative process, they will scour every dark, damp corner of your life.

In the Corps, it's Intel, MARSOC, Comm and some Aviation MOSs as well. Earn your bones in those jobs and the clearance comes as the package.

It's alot easier to get cleared when you're young and don't have a lot of "life experience" that might DQ you. And then keeping the clearance is key because there is no gray area for infractions. And then get re-investigated every 5 years. Good luck

I think the best way is if you currently work for lets say a large defense contractor and are looking for an internal move to fill an open req. From what I have seen that's one of the best ways unless you are in the military. As noted with polygraph is a big one to have.

well the easiest is to start with Secret, and then move up when possible. Best bet is military or fed job that will get you the clearence. Then move onto a contractor that can take you as owning you in JPAS. Secret is easy, TS isnt too hard, TS/SCI is harder.
Poly isnt required for TS, but SCI and higher yes.

Once you get it life is good, and sometimes you learn thingsyou wish you didnt know

All good, but one correction. A poly is not required for SCI. Its job dependent...

the quickest way right now it probably joining the service and getting a job that requires it, still, it's a long process.

make sure it's a job that REQUIRES TS/SCI and not just TS.

other than that... it's pretty hard to get into this business.

You need to be sponsored as mentioned previously. After that, keep your nose clean and aside from speeding tickets you need to let your security officer know. If you get a DUI you need to let them know ASAP. Don't hide it, they will find out at your re-investigation and take it from you and you're screwed.

Good thing about a TS and higher clearance is that you can get a CCW because of it. Especially with all these foreign agents running around the DMV.

Just apply for a CCW as your qualifying factor. Kinda how people walk around with their gov IDs when they're out to lunch. Some are even
color coded for clearance level. Other not so friendly nations know what ids we use and that's like painting a target on yourself.
Like in the military that you're not supposed to be flashing your ID off post or hanging out un your BDUs at the bar etc.

That's what I did for mine told them that due to my clearance I am a valid target for foreign agents. Plus I live in MoCo so that helps. Most of the "dignitaries" live here spying ontge regular person to see if they can compromise them.
