I'd at least try a few disciplines out before committing.

Location helps with this hobby. I'm right at the Mason dixon line so theres dozens of clubs in PA open to the public and it's the same amount of drive to the clubs around the Eastern shore of MD.

If you have to drive hours and hours just to go somewhere different, meh.

What do you mean by disciplines?

He means trying Skeet, Trap and Sporting Clays. They all require different techniques and, sometimes, different equipment. Since they are very different from one another, you should try them out before you buy a gun dedicated to that particular discipline. That is why I recommended the Remington 870 Express Trap. With a barrel change, you can shoot any discipline. On the other hand, a over under made specifically for trap, will be a poor Sporting Clays and Skeet gun.

Although, while not optimum, you can shoot all 3 with a sporting clays gun.

i have and still do shoot all 3 with a mossberg 930 from dicks. plenty to have fun and learn

A mid length semi-auto is also an all around choice.

You can got all 3 with a skeet gun, but not really with a trap gun.
