Took my daughter and her best friend (both 18) to the NRA Range last night for an introduction to firearms. Props to the NRA RSO staff for treating the young ladies like the adults they are becoming. The safety briefings were on-point and serious, but not so much to be intimidating.

The overall experience was excellent, and I appreciated the ad-hoc instruction and the additional set of eyes on the new shooters - extra props for catching the potential for slide-bite with J that I missed while fielding questions from K.

We came away from the evening positive and bubbly. This first outing needed to be a "good thing," and I am certain it was. Many speculations about firearms were dispelled, and a solid first-hand experience replaced them. I have no doubt we will be going back.

My only criticism of the NRA range is its location.

    It should be in Annapolis.

With satellite locations in Baltimore and Bethesda/Chevy Chase.

And Frederick! I always make plans to take visiting friends and family from out-of-town to the NRA Range and Museum. It's a great way to spend an afternoon.

I've been shooting at the NRA range weekly for a few months now, including classes and IDPA matches. I have had zero problems with their RSOs. They keep an eye on the line, and they correct sensibly and politely. The only serious critique I have are:
    1) the no photography rule - I get why it's there given their organizational visibility, but it's extremely annoying for me as a blogger.
    2) no full-auto. Maybe it's a safety thing, but I feel like it's a dick move for the NRA to prohibit legal usage of legal firearms at their range. If I need another card to show I can safely handle one, great, but IMHO, holster draws are a MUCH bigger safety concern.

50yd limit is not that big a deal, at least for me - it gets me on paper well enough that I can hit AGC and tweak it for 100yds pretty fast. Their target system is quite robust in terms of flexibility, and I usually do timed drills with them.

It's interesting to note that this thread started in 2014 was by a newer member with a low post count from Gaithersburg MoCo. Correct me if I'm wrong or does it seem odd that it's a negative thread for ranges hoping to point out the problems with said range. Me Thinks it's info mining and not with good intend. Chris

Shoot, that's the reason I DON'T go to most public ranges...too many goobers practicing unsafe handling and no one telling them to knock it off.

I have heard that the NRA range will be CLOSED this Saturday until 4pm due to the road closure. FYI. Call to verify before you drive over there to shoot.

TMGN has gotta be the biggest shitshow in the area for that. Was just there last night and got a lane next to two dipshits rapid-firing (rented) AR-10's and 12 Gauge shotguns at targets five yards away, while laughing about how they were trolling everyone on the range. No supervision whatsoever. Won't be going back again. Too idiotic for me.

But were they unsafe? I mean, OK, it's a little obnoxious, but I've rapid-fired an AR-308 (with brake, no less) and shotgun before at an indoor range quite safely. I don't know that they should be turning away people because their guns are too loud.

Unsafe? Don't know. Idiotic? Definitely. And I'm not saying they should turn anyone away, I'm just saying a little common courtesy before you cut-loose like Rambo on an indoor range FFS. The fact that they were laughing about it while reloading should've given the RSO the head's-up that they were just being dickish.

I asked in another thread but I'll ask here also. When are good times to go vs. times likely to be very busy?

I went there Sunday noon a few weeks ago, and got a lane right away. The crowd started showing up around 2 pm, though.
