    Wow. Just...wow.

    That is spectacular.

    Well done. BZ

Thanks. I guess with most everyone looking for self-defense arms above anything else right now this Colt Sauer musta slipped through and went for a pretty good bit below market. No matter what else is going on there's always opportunities...I'm well situated with defense oriented arms and ammo and can spend time looking for jewels like this for less than normal.

    Y’all done good. Real good.

I’ve pared back almost all my own cool guns. Headed to strictly milsurp land and black weapons. Logistics are just simpler.

My son has 90% of the good stuff now. It’s his while he can enjoy it.

When ya see something like this though, ya just may have to make an exception.

    Again, well done.

I found something I've been searching for for quite a while...a Colt Sauer Drilling. I've come across them before but the prices were always too high...this I found at an auction and picked it up for a very reasonable cost. I have no practical use for it...just wanted one. Most drillings on the market are in European calibers not easily found here plus the price. This is two 12 gauge barrels over a .30-06 barrel.

I wish I had a better handle on lighting...these pics came out dark. The pics don't do justice to it. It would have been nice to set up outside but the lawn is being mowed and there's clouds of pollen and grass clippings and dust setting everywhere.

Colt had a winner with their association with Sauer back in the day...the rifles were superb as is the drilling. I'd love to also find a Weatherby drilling which is identical to this but with Weatherby's name on it. They're each a Sauer Model 3000.

Very lucky and a great gauge/caliber combo.

My modified Stoeger M3000 Freedom semi-auto

    20200803_131452 crop.jpg

I saw the gun at Dick's in Lexington Park earlier this year and bought it on impulse. I wanted something primarily for home defense in the short term (until I got the HQL and permits), but also for the wide utility of shotguns in particular (hunting, targets, etc) and this one had good reviews in the three-gun sites and for hunting.

The gun is the inertia-driven semi-auto and needs to be broken in. I picked up a bunch of misc shells from area stores and friends' stockpiles. The gun worked fine with just about everything, but would not reliably eject the Fiocchi low-recoil buckshot (probably 80% failure to eject), which is unfortunate since I had bought 200 rounds of it from Bob's Sunoco on sale. I started looking into it and one of the popular mods was to replace the Stoeger extractor and spring with the Benelli M2 parts, which have a sharper claw and a stronger spring. I also found that some of the target shooters were swapping in lighter action bar springs, and heavier action bars, to exaggerate the recoil action. I bought all those parts from MOA Precision and now the Fiocchi cycle about 80% of the time, much better but still not perfect (other loads still run at 100%).

There are a bunch of three-gun mods for the M3000. I am cycling a bunch of shells trying to get this thing working as reliably as possible, and I wanted to make it easier to use:

Briley M-Lok handguard keeps me from burning my hand on the barrel and gives me somewhere to mount accessories. The lower half is not usable because the action bar spring or the added weight on the action bar will catch on the M-Lok hardware, but it still works for mounting stuff up front or on top.

The flashlight is a Streamlight Pro Tac 2, mounted on an aluminum 7-slot pic rail in front of the action bar. One of the range officers at Flat Broke kept saying to get a flashlight, over and over, alright hoss I will do that. I drilled the thumb pad screw holes and it mounts to the upper hand guard nicely. I will move this over to an SBR when I get the HQL.

The ATI shell holder up front is a generic plastic holder, but I was able to mount the top holes to the upper M-lok slots, and secure the front bottom hole, so it is stable. I have a line on another option to mount to the stock that I am pursuing but this works and is handy for hot-swapping five at the range.

Also added a GGAZ strap connector between the stock and receiver, and a Magpul M-lok quick disconnect for a strap up front (helps when cycling a few dozen shells at a time). I also replaced the stock scope rail with a full pic rail (for future activities) and bought the Stoeger walnut stock and a recoil reducer to off-set the added weight up-front. More or less what you see in the pic.

I have some detailed plans for a rifled slug barrel and 26" choke barrel, but not doing anything until I get the HQL and a subsonic 9mm for the house.

Its not as beautiful as some of the artworks in this thread but it is a lot of fun to shoot and I like having it.

Wasnt aware the two companies ever had a relationship.

Colt and JP Sauer had a relationship for about ten years back in the '70s and '80s. The Colt/Sauer rifle is possibly the finest hunting type rifle of its time...even nicer than Weatherby and Sauer made Weatherby Mark V rifles for some time. The Colt/Sauer non-rotating bolt is the smoothest you ever try...again...better then the Weatherby Mark V which is wonderfully smooth.

The downside is the Colt/Sauer was always expensive and still are when you find them. It was and is a super premium rifle with a matching price.

The Colt/Sauer drilling is a great combination gun...as I said earlier...I have no practical use for but but just wanted it. I'm hoping to find a lined hard case for it...maybe have to have one custom made. The gun deserves nothing less.

    Looks cool

A foldin stock and pistol grip would make that a special kinda sexy

That is too cool! What is the barrel length? Looks scout rifle/coachgun handy.

Got my M3k Freedom back from MOA Precision!

I had their full custom service done, including the cool engraving (which was free). Upgraded trigger with quad-load undercut, slug sights, really deep port opening, and the lightning lifter. The lightning lifter is pretty damned cool; instead of the lifter locking flat when the bolt locks back on empty, it stays unlocked. When you load a shell in the tube, it automatically drops it into the chamber and then drops the bolt. No more port loading when you run dry. You have to be fairly aggressive with your load to make it work correctly, but it's a pretty huge advantage in my book.

Quads are also stupid easy to load now with the port opened up this aggressively. Night and day difference from the factory. I'm about $1200 into the shotgun at this point, which is pretty cheap for how well it works.

It's actually a bit tough to find a drilling in anything but odd-to-Americans European calibers along with the shotgun portion. They're usually very high quality as it takes time and ability to get three barrels regulated. I was looking for that Colt-Sauer for a long time...passed on a few due to the asking price. I'm going to get a nice hard case for it.

How do those work? I assume the shotgun barrels are on a single trigger and the rifle barrel is the second trigger?

It's has a button that switches one trigger from shotgun to rifle. It also has loaded chamber indicators. One shotgun barrel is full choke, one is half-choke and then the rifle barrel underneath. Colt only sold them in 12/12/.30-06 and 12/12/.243...I was very happy to find this in .30-06 as I don't own any .243 rifles. Most I've seen for sale were .243...don't know the breakdown of production but it usually seems to be .243 for sale more often.

Thanks for the explanation. I'm going to keep my eye open for one. I have a .243, so will be fine with that.

You're more than welcome. I'm not calling the drilling a grail gun but it's close. I've seen drillings pretty often at the Chantilly gun show in the past, but as I said they were always very high dollar pieces in European calibers almost impossible to find this side of the pond.

I love my M3000. I have a bunch of MOA mods but I didn't do all the three-gun stuff since there's nowhere to do that down here. Do you?

I may add the lightning lifter to my regular gun though.
