Will a broken shell extractor for an AR in .223/5.56 work with an AK74 in 5.45x39? Would one for .308 Win work with a rifle in 7.62/54R or 7.62x39 (all being more or less .30)?

Dont know, never tried to use them for a different caliber. If you use on wrong it can seriously damage the throat and chamber though.

Cerro-Safe is the best for removing separated casings from the chamber but its not as quick as a BSE. You have to melt it, lube the bore, patch the throat and pour it in the chamber hot. It will harden and you then knock out the casing with a solid rod from the muzzle.

Do it wrong and youll have a plugged barrel though.

They have BSE's specifically for those calibers listed.

Use the right tool for the job, it's not a huge investment.

I agree, just thought I'd ask. Brownells appears to have most of what I'd want, except 5.45x39. K-var seems to be out of that one as well.

I used this extractor on 303 Brit cases. Someone said it is for a Browning MG. Anyway it works all the time. I just firmly press it into the chamber until I feel capture and pull the partial case out.

Maybe, Depends on the type of tool and the cases. Mine are shaped like a case in the rear... that way you close the bolt on the tool and when you open it, the broken case comes out... The case heads on 5.56 and 5.45 are less than half a mm different... so it may work (I never tried). As for .308 vs. 7.62x54R... not a chance (at least for that type of tool).
