I recently acquired a Finn-captured Izhevsk M91/30 in a Finnish M1891 stock without a hand guard. I was told that this was a “training rifle” and have seen a few tidbits of information here and there about these so-called training rifles. So far as I can tell, the key characteristics are the M91 stock and the absence of a hand guard. Does anyone have a source for some more detailed information about these rifles (or debunking the claim)? interestingly, the rifle’s serial number is A3240 (Finns matched the bolt) and the importer struck AZ 340 on the receiver (maybe the original was a duplicate?).

Closest to this example is the Finn M27 I have in a 91/30 stock. This is the first I've seen or heard of a 91/30 in a 91 stock or it's use as a training rifle. I'm sure you've posted this to Gunboards. Hopefully one of the Finnish members might be able to shed some light on it. Many years ago when the Finn exports started arriving in the US who would have guessed just how rich the history of their used of of the MN truly was. Like peeling back the layers of an onion, just when you think there's nothing new to learn...
