    So,
I am looking for a new pistol. I narrowed it down between a 10mm and a 454 casull.

Who has both and can lend some advice.

I am leaning towards a 10mm for its capacity

    Where they send me.
    Hmm.

Similar but not really. 10mm is great if you want a wood gun in the form of a Glock 10mm. Not a Glock fan but the 20 (have one) with 15rds in it is hard to argue against, extended barrel bumps it up more.

.454 is a LOT more power. I have the Freedom Arms version and given their quality along with the power I would have a hard time finding a comparison. Add in a 45acp cylinder and it is an amazing platform.

Depends a lot on what one wants to do with it. Anything from Freedom Arms is a buy in my mind and I would go that way if it fits your need.

If I bought one, it would be a 1911 style SA or RIA.
Just based on personal preference, power and platform.

What do you want it for? Shooting pins, buy the 10mm. Shooting bears, by the Freedom Arms. While the 10mm now has ammo that can be used for bear protection, all you have to do is weak wrist one round and you have a jam and the bear gets lunch. The revolver doesn't have this problem.

Just so people don't beat up on me, I carry a Sig 365 so I have high capacity in a small package. I am not going to get a weak wrist jam from it. In bear or moose country, I carry a .44 magnum revolver and I practice with it to empty the cylinder into a 6 inch plate at 20 yards as fast as I can.

Apples and orangutans. 10mm can be a fun powerful and entirely useable caliber from several platforms. Where it's primarily an autoloader caliber it does well in wheelguns, my 610 is a tackdriver, and loading longer OALs allows me to top 700fpe easier than with my GLOCK 20.
From a good SD power level up to 600+FPE you can do a lot with it. One of the better woods guns, but it's tough to hit the 700FPE floor to hunt with it in MD. In many ways 45super can do all that 10mm can do, but handles 45ACP too. 454 is a hunter first and foremost, better at the job, but more limited too, being a wheel gun caliber. I would probably go with a 460s&w though, unless you wanted a compact 454 or another brand, more options, and can handle 454 and 45 colt too. Have fired a lot of 460s, and it's awesome, but just can't justify the expense when It would be a range toy only.

    Well , I have 10mm , and the late #1 shooting and handloading partner had .454 .

    I like 10mm .

I like Big Bore revolvers .

Albeit , I am not in total agreement with Dick Casull's design criteria for the .454 . To wit , his goal was standard weight bullet really, really fast . To me , beyond a certain point roughly in line with 30k .45 Colt or .44 Magnum , I would druther move twords bigger bullets ( weight Or diameter ) at medium speeds , than hyper velocity for its own sake .

Freedom Arms revolvers are exquisite, I'd be honored to be given one, even if a .454 with the short cylinder .

I will offer the observation that .480 Ruger is a most excellent , and widely underappreciated ctg .

I’ve shot 44 Magnum since 1980. I’ve shot heavy 45 in Ruger Blackhawk and full house 475 Linbaugh. I agreed with alucard, apples and oranges comparison. Those ate two entirely different power levels.

If the OP “just wants a pistol” I get it - the 10mm makes more sense. More reasonable ammo costs, shooting a 10 will be more pleasant, more utility, semi auto or revolver choices. If hunting is a serious consideration, pop for a Ruger or other revolver in 454 Casull. Practice with full piwer loads in this caliber will be a highly focused endeavor.

For just shooting get the 10mm find a Detonics (grin).. or if you like recoil than go the 454. Define your needs or should say "wants"
Prefer hand cannons here...TC's in the JDJ rounds.. 44 Blackhawks with some heavy "Keith Style" bullets and loads...and hold-on;);)

I have a Glock 2- and a S&W 460. Most of the rounds I shoot out of the S&W are 454 or .45LC (depending what I can find cheaper). The .454 is a big boy with a lot of power. If you aren't going to use it for hunting then go with the Glock. In addition to the 10mm being somewhat more practical and cheaper, you can get an upper or conversion for a Glock 21 and shoot .45 out of it too.

    Ok, 10mm it is.
I figure I can use my SW 500 or my 44 mag if I want to twist my wrist some while shooting.
Now I will look for a nice 10mm.
Revolver or semi??? Capacity is t what I truly care about in this purchase.

Well shucks , if you already have a .44 Mag and .500 S&W , a .454 would be redundant . ( Unless it would be a Freedom Arms simply for the craftsmanship and accuracy . )

With apologies to Delta Elites and clones , if you want the best platform for 10mm for its own sake , the answer is Glock 20 ( being objective , not channeling fanboy- ism ) .
