    There's a major difference.

One is -12 and the other is .45454545454545454545454545.

See, there is a difference. :innocent0

The sights on the Savage are absolute crap.

Another option is a single shot adapter for the 10/22. Also buy another stock on ebay and cut it down to shorten the LOP.

Newbie question; LOP stands for? Length of pull??

I think I'd give the Rascal a serious look if doing this today. I didn't care for the "crew served" nature of the Cricket and bought a youth sized Rossi "matched pair" to start my kids on. This was a .22 break open which also had a shotgun barrel you install instead of the .22. I don't think either of mykids ever used the shotgun (I went w/ 20 gauge) barrel although friends we loaned it to did.

I bought the Rossi 22/410 combo single-shot for yoot training purposes. I strongly believe in "one at a time" for new shooters. Also, The Boy is a lefty, and the Rossi is pretty abidexterous.

As others have said, 10/22 may be a bit large to fit a lil guy--but he'll also grow out of it fast.

I started my daughter on BB guns and airsoft. More than accurate enough to learn the basics and can be shot (discretely) on your own property.

However her favorite is my full-size .22 AR; she never liked the 10-22 or any other rifle I own in .22. She always asks for the AR. A dedicated upper will run a lot more than a "cheap" .22 but I have to say she makes a fine choice.

Find a youth shooting program. Try NRA, CMP, Four H, Jaycees, American Legion, etc.

There are programs starting with BB guns, Air Rifles, and .22 Rim Fires; with trained instructors, other junior shooters, and competitions.
