    the sun did not shine.
it was too wet to play.
so we sat in the house
all this cold, cold, wet day.

    i sat there with sally.
    we sat there, we two.
and i said, 'how i wish
    we had something to do!'

    too wet to go out
and too cold to play ball.
so I went in the shop
and finally completed the assembly of the Discone antenna I have been putting-off for months.

If you're unfamiliar, a Discone is an omni broadband antenna - good for multi-band scanners and other applications where directional gain can be traded for wider bandwidth. I had previously purchased a Diamond D130J. It's a nice antenna, though it's slightly cumbersome to move around. I have a need for something more "mobile" and less likely to get beat-up while being mobiled.

I designed an 8-radial setup using 3D printed hubs and 3/4" tape measure as the conductive material. I have a long history with tape measures as antennas, and yes, I have put them in orbit around the planet. Here's the basic CAD model, the printed hubs, and the raw materials.

Disassembly of the tape measures went about as expected.

Used a manual punch to put a hole at the end of each segment, then used 180-grit shop cloth to remove the paint.

Yes, I am making razor blades ...

In the CAD model, you'll see an inner "spider" that I expected to fabricate from thin brass sheet stock. I have a roll of 5-mil brass, but SWMBO has appropriated it for a steampunk project she's pursuing, so I reverted to Plan B (after a brief profanity-laced interlude) and stitched together segments of copper tape. Not as elegant as I had planed, but should be comparable in function.

Everything came together nicely, and I can report that the antenna receives well down to about 90MHz in the FM band - did a quick ad-hoc test in the upstairs bedroom. I haven't tried to tune below the FM band, and I don't have a solid read on impedance match because I can't find my SWR meter (dammit.) But the unit does move about the house nicely, and recovers without issue from bashing into door frames and the like.

As for "mobile," this thing rocks. Grab it, crunch it, stuff it in a pack. It springs back to shape without issue.

I knew this was going to be a success

Nice work. It’s a great idea for taking the show on the road.

Found my SWR meter. I don't have the ability to sweep a broad range at home right now ... might take the antenna to work and use their RF measurement rigs (our "antenna guy" would be all over this.)

But for now, SWRs in the HAM bands are pretty respectable -
    @ 142 MHz, SWR = 1.3+
    @ 446 MHz, SWR = 1.6

I'll take anything with an SWR less than 2. I am pleased.

Great results on that tape measure rig! It’s like the Nerd Super Bowl.

My play for today’s NSB game: just dipped my toe in the APRS waters, and got two successful round trips with SMS payloads coming and going. Fun radio, this Yaesu.

Since that's a very broadband antenna, the SWR is probably similar everywhere. As intended.

Always feels good when you build something yourself!

I finally got back on HF semi-permanently last night.

I strung my 130' wire out the second story window. Luckily there was a hook already embedded in the brick, like for a window shutter that wasn't being used. I attached the antenna to that and ran horizontally across the driveway and then down in an "L". There was a big tree between the first turn in the L and I didn't feel like negotiating with it so my wire comes under it, almost 10 feet off the ground at one point. Then anchored the far end to another tree almost 20 feet off.

I hooked everything up and could hear really well on the radio. Someone was running a pileup on 7.15.900 and I could hear those responding from all across the country and some also in Spanish languages.

Did a little FT-8 but was disappointed. PSK reporter says my signal could be heard around the world but I could not get anyone to respond in the WSTG app. I cranked the power up to 80 watts I finally got one guy in Kentucky to respond and that was my only contact for the night.

I got a pi 4 for xmas so in the process of setting that up. I need to order a micro-hdmi > DVI cable. If I get that done then I'll be much more mobile. I strung the antenna up in such a way that it should be easy to bring it down and put it back up without having to throw rocks tied to string over tree branches again. Some day I would like to be portable enough to set up in parks or when we go camping.

It sounds like your clock is off. It's important to have that spot on. Meinberg is a good program, built off the official ntp software.

It's also good to hold down your left shift key, and left click a blank spot on the waterfall, so you can be heard. Working split makes a big difference.
