Some people should not be allowed in the woods.

It is turtle egg laying time and in the state park I saw several this morning laying eggs in a grassy area, I have seen them there for several years about this time. I go back this afternoon and in the same area see a little girl about 8 or 10 years old stooped down with her father standing next to her. Yes she is trying to pet the snapping turtle, it was in the size range of about 6" X 10" to 9" X 12". I told her to be careful because they can bite and daddy says "Oh they do?". So I said "Yes the big ones can bite a broom handle in half and one that size could bite a finger off". They decided to move on. But it was obvious they did not know the first thing about wildlife. :sad20:

I just hope they don't see any of those wild doggies, you know the ones that howl at the moon. Or one of those pretty black kitties with the stripe down it back.

I always try to let nature take it's course. I learned from my mother that pain is a great teacher.

This would have been my own course of action. Make a gentle suggestion that there could be danger, then let them make their own decisions. Then get out the camera for a youtube epic.

You would take great pleasure filming a little girl getting her finger bitten off? You are one SICK individual!

I omitted the sarcasm/humor emojis. My bad. I really thought they were implied. For the record, no, I wouldn't want to see a little girl injured that way.

we have a snapper here in the community - it is aggessive and of size to have much respect given to it.

found it one day trying to cross the road. I hate to see roadkill animals, so I moved him - by carrying from the back of the shell. it was none too happy. it tried several snaps, but couldn't reach me.

even after getting it to the other side and back in my car, it was still facing me, standing tall as if to say "you bastard, come back here so I can bite the hell out of you".

after seeing that I wasn't gonna accomodate its revenge, it headed towards one of the drainage ponds.

hopefully it lives many more years.

I hope you washed your hands afterwards. Old snapping turtles usually have all sorts of nasty stuff growing on their shells. We have an alligator snapping turtle, not native to MD, in the neighborhood that has a shell that is 20 inches wide and weighs, I'M guessing, about fifty pounds. One big mother. I actually measured his shell but wasn't going to attempt measuring it lengthwise.

I have had to help him across the road a few times. When people driving by see me, they get out of their cars to watch but no one ever asked if I needed help. I suspect that someone a long time ago had him as a pet and turned him loose in the marsh.

They were watching to see if that turtle will get any of your fingers.
