30 grain Hornady V-Max performs well in my rifle. It is not good in my Single Six. The older traditional Winchester 40 grain JHP works better for me in the handgun.
And.... whatever you're shooting may prove to be just the opposite, or neither of the above.
Rimfires IMO are notorious for displaying ammo preferences. Not only by brand, but also by lot.
Try anything you can get your hands on, and ideally that you can also replicate the lot number of. Lay in some stock should your firearm show a pronounced preference.
My revolver, Ruger single six only shoots 45 gr Winchester Dynamax bullets. Well the only ones it shoots close to where I am aiming the CCI's all types go allover the place.
Winchester 22 WMR Ammunition Super-X X22MH 40 Grain Jacketed Hollow Point is the most accurate in my rifles, and several friends rifles as well. It’s very effective for hunting. There is also a solid tip version that groups just as well.
With the lighter tip, faster rounds, they don’t seem to group as tightly. I get just about all ammo choices and compare them, but still haven’t found anything that shoots better than this Super X.
I have found that .22 Mag is more finicky than .22 Long Rifle in older Ruger revolvers. Some shot fine, others were like shotguns. You really need to match up your gun with the ammo you like. If you go for headshots, just about all will do the job as long as you don't over reach.
