$30 is cheap for 1000 but literally can pick up gun clubs from the ground and trash cans for free considering so many shoot them. I never even thought to find a recipe for anything else

I once dumpster dived 6-7 sharpie marked gunclubs, I'm usually 12-13 reloads before I run out of room with the sharpie.

Oh I can assure you I’ve done my time in the trash can at the range:innocent0, I just haven’t had the time to get to the range lately and had to grab what I could while I was working. Now that I’ve got some time off I’m hoping to be able to spend more time in the trash can, whoops, I mean the range.:D

Arthritis made me give up 12ga but, when I was shooting, I gave up AA's and went to gun club shells. They loaded great and I didn't have to worry about when the mouth hardened up or split since there were millions to be found. Since they are sold by the big discount stores, people at clubs all over are using them.

I wish I could say the same for the 28ga that I shoot today. :sad20:

    Slight hijack:
What is the average cost to reload a 12 gauge, #8, 1-1/8 oz, 2-3/4 dram?
Say the hull is free, no fancy stuff just run of the mill components. I usually manage to buy new flats @ $35 - $40. I’m just curious where the bottom is if I reloaded.

Well I’ve read somewhere that at current prices it’s cheaper to buy factory 12 gauge, but as you go down in size the price savings goes the other way.
I just like tinkering and loading stuff for the most part.
But here’s what I figured it’s been costing me lately for my 12 gauge
At 1 1/8 oz of shot I’m figuring .11 cents per round ( 355 loads per 25 pounds @ 1 1/8 oz loads, shot price from cabelas $39.99 free shipping)
At 17 grains of Clays powder .06 cents per round ( 411 loads per pound @ 17 grains, I used $25 per pound from my normal local powder supplier but I actually got my latest pound for $22 from a store in Pennsylvania)
    Wads .02 per round ( I’m figuring $10 per 500 Claybusters WAA12 replacements)
Primers .03 per round ( I used $29 per 1000. I actually got a steal at Field and Stream for $26.95/1000)
So I figure with free hulls it’s around .22/round or $5.25/25 round box, a flat is what 250 rounds? So about $52.50/flat
    I’m hoping my math is correct.:o :D

yeah I load 7/8 oz rather than 1 1/8 which gets me more rounds out of a 25lb bag. It also is less recoil and breaks clays the same at trap & skeet distances.
I still have around 20 bags which were $25.00 and plenty of cheap primers so my real costs are powder and wads.
I load 12 mostly because I like to shoot antique guns and want low pressure low recoil loads for old wood and sometimes damascus barrels. The wood is actually the fragile part.

It's been years since I've shot trap or skeet and reloaded for it. But I'll agree with Buff7mm, that for run of the mill 12ga and 20ga loads buying bulk ammo can be cheaper than reloading. Now if you need something specialized like 28ga or .410 or a reduced-recoil load or some sort of heavy handicap load, reloading will probably save you money.

In my case, the small skeet range I was shooting on (Sparta, NJ) required 1oz 9's in 12ga due to the space limitations. Here, reloading was cheaper than buying $10/box AAs at the local sporting goods store.
