Good morning Maryland!!! Its a beautiful day and its great to be alive.

I have been bitten by the 6.5 bug... more particularly the PRC. For the tenth year in a row I have been focusing on my .308 and now im ready for new challenge.

Since this is a relatively new caliber, I figured id share my journey. I have literally just finished bedding my barreled action to the stock.

The platform is an old Rem 721 long action. I gave a 31” Bartlein barrel to the gunsmith, and we decided to cut it down to 27”. The barrel is 1.25” at the chamber, and tapers to 1.0” at muzzle. 1:8 twist.

The bolt face was opened up, and we also installed a sako extractor.

This sits on an old fiberglass stock that was sitting around the shop. Seemed decent enough. Looks okay.

Additionally I did a full length bed job for this build. JB weld.

I havent purchased a scope yet. Still deciding what avenue I want to go. Im a sucker for Vortex.

I have decided to start with the 143ELDX and have decided to start with a not so hot load with H4831, with CCI BR2’s.

Will add pics of the rifles performance after I find a scope and as I work up the loads.

Nice! What Smith did you use? Also, why did you want to bed the full length?

I am looking at starting a 6mm creedmoor build in the next two months.

I decided with full length bed because the barrel was so heavy. Have never used a barrel this heavy. Ive always free floated barrels, but i figured I could see how this would go. Can always dremel it out i guess. I use a guy named Mike in DE.

    Test Day

For anyone that is interested in results, I will be testing this new build at my range today. We’ll see how the full length bed job performs. Honestly, i am extremely suspect. I also bedded the scope base. Additionally, I am shooting factory 143eldx so that i can get some brass for hand loads. Stay tuned.

    Hand Loads.....

Hey guys... Since I have started this build Ive been monitoring sites on internet for information on hand loads for this caliber. Just being curious how people are making out and such. Lot of stuff floating around thats a year old... not too much current information. I thought that I would just share my findings as I begin to bring this rifle on line.

I decided on a powder nobody was using... h4831.

Additionally I have full length bedded the barrel.... because I was curious.

The pictured results are from once fired hornady brass. Neck sized only. .001” off of lands. Hornady 143eldx bullets, H4831, br2 primers. 100yds.

*Middle is 3 shots of factory rounds which averaged 2985. Fast, but Terrible group.

Top left 48.5gns , top right 50.5gns, bottom right 52.5, and bottom left 54 even. Neither one of the hand load groups were moving faster than 2982... which begs the question.... whats the point of PRC when you can get from creedmore?

You can see groups open up at bottom right, then tighten slightly last group bottom left. I saw zero pressure signs, in fact factory round primers were much flatter.

I am going to speed it up... so will we’ll see how things go and if that last spread keeps tightening.

Was very tickled with first two groups.

    Below are the chrono reads from the handloads;

    2688
    2699
    2693
    2699
    2721

    2830
    2777
    2783
    2777
    2783

    2898
    2873
    2861
    2879
    2873

    2949
    2969
    2949
    2982

Finally, the second picture is a three shot group at 400 yds. Using the slower hand loads.
