Been shooting for a real long time. Nra inst, ccw, shoot weekly or bi weekly. Indoors, outdoors. From the holster. I like to drill, and learn new things. But When i talk to a potential instructors on the western shore about self defense shooting the requirement is classes, more than one or two. Then after several, shoot. When i volunteer the courses i have taken, the response is no credibility forthe course or the instruction. Even when i add that a class was populated with out of state state police. Would like to find someone to shoot with, one or two on one, and get down to it after my skill and safety levels ( or lack of) are assessed.

Why don't you join IDPA and shoot with them. It is not training but, if you have had training already, it will allow you to practice what you already know. If nothing else, it will allow you to see what gun/holster/carry position works for you.

John, i don’t know anything about IDP , but it would be a lot of fun. I will do some searching and see how feasible it will be for me, time wise and distance. Thanks.

I don't know where you live but IDPA (International Defensive Pistol Association) is shot in Thurmont, Annapolis and Lexington Park. There may be other ranges in MD as well but I am not sure. You can go and watch when they have a match and get the idea of what is going on. IDPA shooters are friendly and will gladly give you information and advice.

John. I found the range in annapolis on line. Will keep looking for more info. I am close to annapolis. How long is a match. 180 rds? I really boged down with the classifications on the IDPA web site.

The matches at Annapolis tend to be 6-7 stages and we shoot them in about 2.5 hours, plus setup/takedown. I typically shoot around 115 rounds per match.

also look for uspsa, generally more running around/movement and generally higher round counts. steel challenge is a good starting point, really no movement, draw and shoot five pieces of steel, do that four more times, move onto the next stage that is the same thing but laid out differently.

you can go to idpa and uspsa websites, but also www.practiscore.com lists all sorts of matches and you can focus on your area.

i know it's pretty far from you, but www.peacemakernational.com above winchester, va hosts a lot of fun matches. they have steel challenge, super steel (run around and shoot falling steel) and kahr defensive (sort of a mix between idpa and uspsa, run around and shoot mostly cardboard targets with some falling steel sprinkled in). they're pretty newbie friendly and i'd be happy to show you the ropes at any upcoming matches. also they do some morning and afternoon matches, to give you time to get out there, check out the morning match, and shoot the afternoon match.
