So what kind of effective range are we actually talking about? Further than a fly swatter could reach?

I'm a little worried that I would get in trouble for having salt everywhere :o

No, effective range is more like 6 inches. It'll fling salt clear across the room, but if you want a tight enough group to get many grains of salt on target and have enough power to kill the fly, you have to be pretty close. And yeah, first thing my wife always says after I kill a fly with it is "make sure you clean up all the salt!" Haha.

The salt grains actually turn to dust & disappear if you shoot the fly against a wall or window.

I just use my 22. Yeah I got a lot of holes in the house but it sure does put a hurtin on bugs when you hit them. Scares hell out of the dogs but I staple headsets on them before I start shooting! They try to bite me every time I pull the Stanley stapler out. I'm gonna go get another beer now.

Forget the beer, you need another snort of that stuff you've been smoking.

Use .22 birdshot you get more holes but they are smaller diameter and not as deep.

Darn. That answers my question …

Necro thread resurrection as I did a search curious as to whether these bug a salt toys would / will be enough to decisively kill some species of orb spiders on our dock - that only come out at night.

Bad news is they are relatively “larrrrge” - (imagine a big gum ball, only squishier) but,

    - good news is, in the dark (and after the flood lights come on) they stay perfectly still and remain motionless, centered exactly in the middle of their webs.

We typically use an old broom to reach up to where their webs are overhead, to try and “scoop-knock” ‘em onto the dock and then squish em and sweep em overboard where the fish quickly come up to get their remains but,

… enough got away this evening I thought, “there’s gotta be a better way.”

So, once the led flood lights come on they make easy targets but, I didon’t want to spend $50 or whatever the salt toys are going for just to find out it is gonna knock ‘em in the water where they will survive and simply crawl back up on the dock …
Cant use those wasp stream aerosols as too great a chance the boat and its fiberglass paint job might suffer damages. Same no-go goes for using .22 shotshells (of which we are siting on a heap of) as not only do i not want to scare our dawg but, we have two new neighbors both specialist docs with small babies and their whole family is lights out at like 9pm which we respect …

Figure most shots would be from 6-feet distance …

Guess I’ll keep using the old broom …

I've left blood streaks from the spiders I've killed with the salt toy. The lawn and garden or version 3.0 will do you just fine.

It's funny how Orb Spiders seem to zero in on the door areas of your house. Even without using the outside lights, come late summer they start making webs right dab smack in front of the door. I will say that some are very colorful and make beautiful webs. However, I use the old broom method to make sure I can get in and out of the house without having a bunch of sticky sh*t around my head.

Haha, yep, nature‘s colors can be more fascinating than a rainbow flag (:puke:) and the webs positively intriguing and we leave em (and pretty much every other creature) be outside the house, turfstand and boat docks. Thank heavens 30-45 day alternations between “TalStar Pro” (a.i, bifenthrin) and “Cyzmic CS“ April-Oct ensures NUTHIN with more than 4 legs crawls or creeps ANYwhere near exterior or interior of actual house itself.

(I was surprised to learn the primary reason nearly all insecticides are ineffective against spiders is because UNLIKE nearly every other insect on God’s green planet, spiders DO NOT “groom” either themselves or other spiders!)

But, we have a firm “no chem sprays” over the water so, I will be excited to get this Bug A Salt “devastator!” (rubbing hands with evil grin)

Funniest part will be the reactions of the local folks who nighttime fish … this is still very much a “small town world” and I can hear “the buzz” down at Floyd’s barbershop, now! :lol2:

After using one the past couple trips up to camp in Canada, I broke down and got the Black Fly 3.0 edition. It is the bomb.. the safety can remain off, holds more salt (I use kosher) and has greater velocity (have not chrono'd it yet tho) and a slightly more effective range. Almost picked up a red dot for it yesterday at bass pro, but I actually have one in package sitting on the table to send up to my buddy in Canada this week.. lol

I have the 3.0, great for flies but it will not kill carpenter bees, my intended targets. This one should kill most any bug but it is crazy overpriced and you have to buy their salt cartridges. I did find some you tube vids where some refilled them though.

I use any can of aerosol spray on them.. I also put up a couple of fake hornets nests (made from a paper bag) this summer and they actually seem to have deterred the wood eating pests so far pretty well. I keep either a tennis or badminton racket close by the back door where I normally seem them buzzing my back decks.. That is quite lethal when they taunt you!

Another perk after I just about walked into this out splitting some wood this morning.. the 3.0 version has fixed front and rear sights, the rear being an LCI, it retracts after firing and pops up when you chamber a round.

Works on spiders well and this one has pretty good range for the ones up high on the walls..
