I have Fed .223 brass that has crimped primers! I was a bit surprised when I discovered that MANY companies now crimp their primers. Seems many Law enforcement units use commercial .223 in their AR's and want the crimped ammo for safety. At least that's what I have been told!
Every piece of PMC brass Ive picked up at ranges have had crimped in primers. Ive had to swage everyone of them before reloading.
The main intent of crimped in primers is to avoid primer pop off during full auto fire. The chambers can get so hot, that the heat can cause the primer to blow out, and basically jamming the works. In a combat /defense situation, that could be a big problem.
This is why you see crimped in primers in 9mm, 45 Auto, .223/5.56, etc - all those round are used in some form of full auto fire weapon.
