"Do a search for the many discussions on what is and is not regulated.

Why don't we have a sticky for this yet??? "

    Good idea.

I sold one years back. The Firearms Division of MSP stated it had to be configured and marked HBAR by any manufacturer. Yet we have other barracks stating configuration is what determines it. What if the reciever of an AR variant is sold as regulated, then configured as an HBAR? I know I'd sell it through aspices of MSP only.

As would I, even though it is not regulated. There is the law, and then there is reality. While the law would allow it, I don't want some clown reverting it back to a regulated state and then MSP assuming I sold a regulated firearm in violation of the law with me on the hook to prove I didn't.

Just one reason I built my own receivers while living in MD.

If it says "I'm a sporter model I'll never hurt anyone!" then it's an unregulated HBAR. If it looks mean and scary them it's totally illegal

Yes, and you'll also have to hide the kitten's/puppies as it will spontaneously fire upon them or worse yet, bayonet them. :lol2:

I have 20 guns and a 6.5lb cat...she's managed to dodge the bullet for about 3 years now. So I don't blame the guns lol.

In laymans terms a 'Heavy Barrel' - for an AR it specifically means the barrel UNDER THE HANDGUARDS is roughly 0.95" +/- 0.05" in diameter.

At some point under the hand guard or contiguous? All my barrels exceed that diameter under the hand guard at the receiver end.

    Nothing like reviving dinosaur threads.

In MD, the only definition of what an HBAR is, is the one used by MSP.

Which is advertised or stamped HBAR PERIOD

Unless you want to possibly be the test case in court over the matter.

There are plenty of ARs on the MSPD Firearm Search website that do not have HBAR barrels and are not banned.

    1) Many of the are piston guns, and are therefore not a copy of an AR-15

    2) The list is NOT legally binding. It says so on the page.

There have been several guns showing as Banned, that when questioned were no longer Banned. And there have been one that were clearly banned, but showed up on the list as not banned.

If that is true, and it certainly is, then just buy their barrels and build whatever the hell you want!!!

If you want to possibly be the test case for HBAR.

There is more to a rifle than the barrel. The one not banned my be a piston gun, versus DI. Even though you could use the barrel off the piston gun, the gun you build will be illegal.

    This

    Let's call it "MD HBAR"

No connection to any measurements,, profiles, etc. LE will not measure your barrel profile and make a determination.

They will ask for your documentation that is was articulated by the manufacturer as an HBAR.

You are the manufacturer? Gets even grayer. Myself, I wouldn't.

IANAL YMMV and I don't think there have been any test cases on this.
