    Cecil!
Just wondering how many uses other reloaders get from using a vibratory tumbler and corn cob grit. I use it for pistol brass and after about 5 or so loads it seems to lose its effectiveness. Thoughts?

I use fine corn cob media with a cap full of IOSSO case polish added to it and it works very well. Add a cap full every so often when it starts to loose effectiveness and it works just fine. I toss the media when corn cob starts to leave too much powdery residue behind. How much residue is too much is sort of subjective but you kind of know when it is too much.

I've never used corncob, but my walnut seem to last forever. I know it doesn't last that long but I definately get way more than 5 uses from it before it looses its effectiveness.

Dont use it anymore because i don't think it works long enough. Use walnut now. Only reason I'd use corn cob would be to polish by adding Nu finish but I can do that with walnut.

Thanks for the quick replies. Been thinking about switching to walnut for a while now. I'll use this batch of corn cob and when it's time to resupply make the switch.

Also use Walnut shells but add a Used Cloth Dryer Softener Sheet to pick up Dust Etc, It will turn Black !

I usually add 3 or 4 sheets in. I use dirty media to tumble the range pickups the first time. I keep Clean media for the second tumble of range brass.
I tried to rinse it with water, but too much of PIA to dry it all out.

I am trying to get away from washing because of the drying. I feel like it takes half a day to get it all dry.

I only clean my cases--I don't try to scrub them down to the brass on the interior. As such, normal cleaning time with 20/40 corn is 30 minutes.
If you are so concerned about the soot, get an ultrasonic cleaner or stainless steel pins. For me, complete cleaning takes 20 minutes in my ultrasonic and 6-8 hours in my Thumler's Tumbler and 5 lbs. of SS pins. Of course, that does mean you need to deprime before cleaning, but I've been doing that for decades any way.
As always remember: cleaning is called out so you don't damage your sizing die and instructions a couple of decades ago was to simply "wipe off the case exterior and inspect the case interior."

I renew my media when it seems to lose it effectiveness. I use Dillon Polish. Just add a cap full or two when starting a batch.

The corn cob lizard bedding I got from Pet Smart is too big for 5.56. It ends up packed in a number of the cases. It works fine for loaded ammo or straight walled cases.

I use Lyman corn cob media for tumbling 5.56 brass.

This! I got a 10 lb bag from the pet store by the mall over three years ago. Separated it into containers from the dollar store. I am still on the first container, and the current batch has been used a metric shit ton load. I've done pistol and rifle with this and it is still going. It is getting to the point where it gots really dusty, but the dryer sheet trick works. I guess when the dryer sheet no longer works, I'll use the other half of the first container. I still have three full never used containers in reserve.

You really should put strips of paper towels sprayed with WD40 in with your tumbling media if you use it a long time. The towels will collect the lead and carbon dust that is the by product of tumbling. I know some folks like to have shiny brass but the original intent was to clean it so that it didn't scratch the non carbide die surfaces. A 1/2 hour in a vibratory tumbler is plenty for just fired brass after a day of shooting.
