Brand new unfired Remington 1187 sportsman. Just received back from warranty repair, entire receiver was replaced due to barrel fitment issues. Noticed the slot machined in the barrel where the receiver lug mates has crude indent and material is pushed into the groove. This is where the lug ends up at assembly and it’s tight to get it past there. Is this to keep the barrel tight or poor machining?

No that isnt normal, i would send it back yet again if the poor machining is inhibiting proper function, probably a good reason why big green is going to crap.

I was afraid of that. Not sure how they wouldn’t notice that considering the problem was with barrel fit.

the only good thing is that groove doesn't appear to be in the chamber area so it should have it's structural integrity; however, that is poor workmanship and I personally would have no qualms in sending it back. have you pulled it fully apart to see how the receiver fit and finish is? are there any other issues?

This will be the second trip back, last time was about 4 weeks. Gonna try to get a new gun out of them but doubt that will happen.

This does not inspire confidence. I had a problem with my 20 gauge 870. I had not used it in a while and the extractor froze in the sealed bolt assembly. I had to replace the entire assembly. I also have a 12 gauge 870 made in the mid early 80's, never had a problem with it.

Back when they still made good stuff. my 870 slug gun is from that time period has served me well for the past 15ish years

Is Paducah doing the work, or Remington? I've experienced issues with Paducah performing the warranty work for Remington:

Paducah, I’m not positive but I think this was their doing. I can’t imagine I missed that originally but I can’t be positive. I think they peened the rail to try to straighten the barrel. Remington is sending a new barrel so I’ll see how that fits. This was how the barrel fit originally. Sorry, can’t figure out how to rotate the pic

Remington sent me a new barrel and everything looks good. Although I’m not too pleased that I had these issues, customer service was top notch.

quality is suffering over the last few years. would rather find a nice used one rather than buy one of those sportsman model they sell now
