Been there done that, got kicked out of Bass Pro for the same thing. I even had a good argument. They sold me .223 which can go into an "assault rifle" that can kill somebody from hundreds of yards, holds 30 rounds, yet they wouldn't sell me 40 S&W for my CX4 carbine that is "supposedly" a handgun round only good for close range. I said the DC snipers used .223 and you will let me buy that, but not the 40S&W???? WTF?

Welcome to the forum! These things are a pain in the ass, I felt like a goober getting walked to the cash register today at Dick's before they handed me the ammo.

Weird, I buy ammo from Dicks in Glen Burnie all the time and usually the hardest part is finding the person that's supposed to be hanging out around the guns/ammo counter.

Huh???? Maybe I missed something, but...

Were you also buying a gun? Or were they really being stoopy?

no gun, just some .223 and .22. Of course this was in Gaithersburg.... They usually let me carry .22 only. But I've always gotten the escort with .45 or 9mm...

I was in Frederick last night at the Walmart off of 85 and purchased several boxes of 12GA shells and 2 boxes of 22LR. I did get the ? if these were for a pistol and I confidently told the young lady, that no, of course not, these are for my rifle....

never mind they could be fired from a pistol - but since I gave her the right answer, there wasn't an issue....

guess it all depends on who you get to wait on you - shouldn't be this difficult, but it obviously is... what a world we live in.

Let's actually look at the law on the books, shall we?

Wow. That is a horrendously vague law. About the only ammunition that I can think of that qualifies is 9mm Makarov. No joke. It doesn't say "commonly" designed for or "usually" designed for, it says "solely" designed for. Clearly, this law was not written by someone who knew anything about guns. WalMart's store policy seems to be to err on the side of caution, but it's not consistently applied. Some stores demand ID, some want to know if it's for a rifle or a pistol, and some just don't care.

    Wikipedia said:
The 9×19mm Parabellum (abbreviated 9mm, 9×19mm or 9×19) cartridge was designed by Georg Luger and introduced in 1902 by the German weapons manufacturer Deutsche Waffen und Munitionsfabriken (DWM) for their Luger semi-automatic pistol

so the law says what the ammo was solely designed for. in this case it was solely designed for a pistol. since that time rifles have been made to make use of the ammo, but that doesnt change what it was designed for in the beginning.

    * i dont agree with the law.

The last time I bought .22 ammo in a Walmart that asked me if it was for a pistol. I replied "they make .22's pistols"? She just rung it up. I assume they wanted to record the purchase.

Yes Walmart asks if 22 ammo is for handgun, or rifle (the register asks, the employee never ask me) If its for a pistol, you have to be 21. They ask for no proof, so it dont make much sense.

I'd like to see the rigmarole created if you go to wallmart and buy a box of 9mm, a skimask, and duct tape.

But this makes me curious. Are .22 long rifle rounds primarily classified as rifle ammo or handgun?

So is that like being carded for booze and I should be happy, I'm 62 and i don't look 21. So I figured they wanted to record the purchase.

i need to read this thread to see what peope say no to the poll. Someone 18 years of age can go off to war and die for this country but can't but hangun ammo? I know boot camp builds character but that has no bearing on that. Change the enlistment to 21 then I'll agree.

THIS SILLY LAW HAS BEEN REPEALED.

So anyone can buy any ammo...while the stores want to make the sale now is a different story...but the law is repealed.

It's a poorly written law made by people who do not understand firearms in order please their constituents in seemingly making their gun-infested neighborhoods safer.

    Are you sure?
I was under the impression that the law against possession by someone under 21 was repealed, not the law against purchasing. But, then again, I was wrong once, I guess it could happen again.;)

I thought the purchase and possession was wrote all the same.

    Maybe I'm wrong...
