The first decent snow this winter, so I decided to photograph some of my K31's with some Swiss surplus gear.

p.s. Bringing the thread back from the dead.

And, for those not in the know, that picture explains the condition of the buttstocks of most, if not all, of the Swiss rifles I've seen over the years.

Including the unloved Model 1893 Carbines? Funny how you hear rumors about Swiss troops abusing their M93s in order to rid themselves of them. Which included intentionally damaging stocks. Yet they're highly collectible here in the US. Go figure. It's the one Swiss variant that I've never yearned for so I can understand their reluctance to keep one as an issue weapon if true.

I was told that the Swiss soldiers often used their rifles to scrape the snow off the sides of their boots and that's why the "beaver chewing" is normally only found on one side of the buttstock.

Glad there was a post in this thread
I have been working on a long term project with my Model 1878 Vetterli

I spent 3 weeks rubbing on Kroil then wiping off as well as cleaning up the rusty bore with Kroil then pushing thru a Brush coiled up with a Frontier metal cleaner. My fault that I took no before pics.
I did not have to touch the wood.
I had the bolt converted to center fire and already built some light reloads onto cast Bullets to shoot after researching and communicating with other reloaders. Will use a sled and a remote (long string) to get the first shots off.

Purchased this a few years ago for $150

Great photo! But now you need three Stgw57s to go with that M71 helmet.

According to the Swiss guys they got fined really bad if they mistreated their gear (to the point of buying duplicates with their own money so they could keep issued items nice for inspections), so the stock abuse likely happened after they got turned in. K31s were still used as guard duty rifles into the 1980s, so that’s probably when they got beat up—it wasn’t in a soldier’s name, so he didn’t care.

I would love just one Stgw57, but they are unobtanium and I also think banned in Maryland. I think Combloc picked up an AMT before they were banned.

Neither the AMT nor the PE57 are banned yet.

BTW, that is one excellent picture. I would have made my rifle available for it.

You can still get them for MG prices basically. Other than shooting 57s in Switzerland, this is the closest I ever got to owning one:

Combloc, let me know if you want me to come over for a photoshoot. I can bring my equipment and spend the afternoon making some great photos of your collection.
